More TH from my Kayfun mini

I have a kayfun mini & I'm doing alright with my builds as far as flavor & vapor production. But I am not getting a good amount of throat hit. It's just too smooth thus rather unsatisfying. My evod provides better throat hit for me than my kayfun.

Can anyone suggest a change in build that might help with increasing TH? I've tried it with the coil closer to the air hole & farther away. Don't know what else I should try to improve the TH. Thanks for the help.

What kind of builds have you tried with it? Are you using it on a mech or a VV/VW device? Can you lower the resistance of your builds, or turn up your wattage/voltage? I build mine with a 1.2 Ohm micro coil and organic cotton ball wick and get a pretty good throat hit from that. Maybe try adjusting your airflow as well? What is your PG/VG ratio? That was a lot of questions!

Need more information:

  1. Juice used - % and nic mg/ml.
  2. Coil type, gauge and resistance.
  3. Wick material and style.
  4. APV and battery variation, if any.

I'm curious too, because on mine, I had to add more VG to dilute the nic and flavor as I was getting an intense TH and the flavor was hitting very sharply.

My setting now is with 30g wire Kanthal w/ cotton for a 1.4ohm microcoil wrapped around a 1/16th pin. I don't do the chimney coil anymore as it hits me too strong, so just running a standard horizontal coil.

I use VCV's Catherine the Grape, 100% VG, 6mg but with the VG dilution, nic level is probably closer to 4mg.

I'm using a ego twist currently but I keep it @ 3.7 volts (which is what I'd like to stay at since I will be using it on a mech when it gets here). I have done a few different wraps since I got it. Each provides decent flavor & vapor but little TH. I've done a 1.5 micro coil with cotton using a 1/16th coil using both 28 & 30 gauge wire. I've done a silica micro coil using 30 gauge (don't know the exact diameter on that one but all the silica wraps have been S wraps on 2 mm silica). That one ohmed @ 1.7. I've done a 7 regular wrap on silica using 30 gauge. I've done a 4 & 5 wrap with 32 gauge on silica.

I'm using 80/20 pg/vg & my nic level is 18 or 24 depending on the juice.

it's getting annoying though because my drippers with 1/16 coil cotton vape awesome & have good TH, flavor & all that but this one I'm having a hard time with.

edit: I guess the lowest ohm I would want to go with this twist would be like 1.3 since the amp limit is 3.

Wow, 80% PG w/ 18-24mg nicotine would absolutely floor me! Your coil setup seems to be the same as mine, same diameter, wicks, etc... so I have no idea why no TH for you when you say your other devices provides you the appropriate levels.

I assume that your vapor levels are perfect too, just missing that TH correct?

For the most part the vapor levels are good but they do go up & down. That's got more to do with not getting the wicking length exactly right a few times though. But I think I've got that worked out with these last few wraps. It's just the TH isn't there.

Yea, it's weird because I have a dripper with the exact same build pretty much as my first kayfun try (the micro coil with cotton) and that one hits perfect on every level so I thought I'd have no big problem with a Kayfun since others have such good experiences with them.

I'm getting a bit discouraged about it though now. Starting to think that maybe because of the way it's designed it's just not going to give me the TH I'm used to. idk. Gonna try for a bit longer with it but hopefully someone has suggestions on a build that will make a difference.

All I can think of, short of 36 mg/ml juice, is that you try some vertical coils (what HawaiiVPR alluded to in post #5 as a "chimney" coil) with "nest" or "surround" type wicking. Verticals can be a bit more finicky with wick material density and burnt hits, but they typically offer a little better TH.

Yep, try a vertical "chimney" coil maybe. Here's a link on how to build it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7o7RFoTtw0 Rip is building on a full sized Kayfun Lite, but the build should transfer over to the mini fairly easily. Hope this helps!

Haha. Love the thumbnail for the video. RiP cracks me up. Dude sure has some creative builds though.
Can't believe your not getting TH from that juice and those setups. Have you tried spraying the juice in your under your tongue, just kidding (don't try that).
Let us know how the "chimney" goes if you try it. I've been considering a mini, because the Lite is just so bleeping good. Have you tried a KFL or 3.1?

Yea I don't know what it is. I mean, I generally like a tight draw, which I know is weird compared to most vapers I read about, but I do. so the drippers I have have never been drilled out & they have micro coils with cotton & produce a good amount of vapor (not huge cuz no huge air hole) but the TH is really really good. But then when I hit this Kayfun it tastes really good & nice vapor but I feel like I have to hit it over & over again constantly cuz I'm just not getting the TH I'm used to from my drippers. Eventually I end up hitting one of my drippers to get the TH so obviously I have to do something to improve this lol.

I've see that others have to decrease their nic level with the Kayfun but that has never been a problem for me other than the fact that I hit it waaaaaaaaay too much because of the low TH.

Thanks for the links to Rip's video. I'll check that out & see if I can get something like this working. Most appreciated peeps. :)

No I haven't tried one of those yet. The mod I had was smaller so the mini was best for me. But if you like the bigger Kayfuns I'm sure this one will be just as good. I like everything about it as far as ease of build, filling, & all that. It's a good quality atty. I'm just thinking that maybe I'm really a Reo person & should have gone that route lol. That will be my next investment.

Ya. It could be that the Kayfun is just not for you. Depending on your dripper it's understandable that you're getting more TH from them vs. the Kayfun. I do find more TH from my RDA and HH357 (generally). So it could be that avenue suits your vaping preference better. Any ways see if the vertical works better for you and hopefully you can find your vaping bliss. If not from the Kayfun maybe something else. That's the lovely thing about vaping right now. There are just so many good products out there.
