I always suggest a Volt kit with two batteries, the smooth sampler pack (and some extra carto's) to beginners. It's just very convenient and inconspicuous, and the 555 and RY4 prefilleds are quite good.

I managed to mostly quit smoking with a Bloog kit (which is basically the same) a few months ago, something I never managed to do with my old joye510. I now have a lot of (cheaper) mods, but still use my Bloogs and Volts quite often, mainly when going out. I'm now completely smoke free (except for two cigs I had in the last two months), and I wouldn't have been able to do that if I started with my riva's and mods, because I had to experiment a lot to find stuff that I liked for the 510 threading. LR/SR? Atomizers? Boge/SmokTech/Kanger/Echo cartos? 510-T/Ego-T? CE2/CE3? Some juices not performing well and clogging up my stuff? Getting primer juice out of my atties? VV? Leaking, burnt taste, ... There's just too many options and problems. The Volt/Bloog stuff just works, and works well, and it's consistent.

I do use 510 stuff more often now, but it's overwhelming for beginners.

For a beginner I would suggest what I did. I searched online for the best price and warranty. The one I chose had a return within 30 days and money back if you did not like them and a lifetime warranty on the batteries. free shipping all the time. Comes with everything you need to start.

ricks - ... inquiring minds ... and just what was /where did you find your "starter".

Best, easiest, low cost, starter kit is a Riva 510 Lite bundle from Liberty-Flights and a couple of 5 packs of Boge 2ohm cartomizers, and a drip tip.

Sorry for the newbie question, but I have a Riva 510 on its way to me, and I am curious about your comment about cartomizers and a drip tip. They go together? I thought atomizer replaced the need for an atomizer and cartridge, but aren't able to be used for dripping? I've never dripped before, but I want to start, but thought I'd need an atomizer with a drip tip, not a cartomizer. Am I just confusing terminology?

I don't want to offend anyone, so I hope I don't. I just thought I should share my quick opinion on smoke tips. While lifetime batteries sounds like a great deal, it's contingent on a couple of things. One, you don't use any cartomizer other than their own. Two, you don't refill their cartomizer. They claim that a pack of 10 for 20 bucks is equal to 1.25 cartons of cigs. I find this claim to be completely subjective. It was my finding with the Njoy, that I'd go through a carto in less than a day, while they would say it's worth one pack of cigs. I believe these claims are made based on light smokers.

The next thing I have to wonder is how they can be sure that you follow those two rules before making good on a claim. Batteries are disposable items that will never last forever. Everybody wants to eventually sell you another battery, so how are they going to deny a claim. My best guess is that they'll judge you on your buying habits, because they can't be sure that you didn't break the two rules. I'm willing to bet that a pack of 10 will only last you 10-15 days most, depending on your habit. You'll probably be spending 40 to 60 dollars a month on them. That spending will wear on someone quickly, when a lot of people are mixing their own juice for less than 5 bucks for 30ml, or just buying pre-made juice for 10 to 15.

I'm just not buying this great offer of theirs.

Yep, two separate things. He's saying to get some LR cartomizers because the starter kit doesn't include any, and get a drip tip to go on the atomizers that do come with the starter kit.

To split hairs, you can put a drip tip on a cartomizer, but you can't use it for dripping. Most people do it so they can quickly remove the drip tip to refill the cartomizer.

Than dont buy it. I started with them In Dec of 2010 and my wife started soon after. Whenever a battery dies, they just send a new one. No questions asked. We buy 10 boxes of 10 cartos every month to 2 months at $15.96 per box. My wife will only use the SmokeTips]

I'm sorry if I offended you. That seems to me to be a lot of money spent every month. I understand that it's still cheaper than smoking cigarettes, but I'm looking to spend pennies a day for my habit, not dollars. I think most people around here are looking to saving many dollars. I'm just offering my opinion. If you like what you've got, great. It was just my opinion. And I'm not going to buy it. I just placed my first order for DIY juice today, and I'm quite happy with my ego-t. Just thought I'd research for others, not for myself.

I find a lot of people dont want to play with liquids and refilling cartos, at least not in the beginning. These e-cigs were one of the most cost efficient ways to start. They stand behind their product with the best warranty. You did not offend me at all, I was just offereing my opinion.

I have an ego-T as well, and it's too much screwing around for someone who's just starting out. E-powers are garbage as well (the IDEA of the e-power is awesome, execution not so much) and some people are put off by the size of them.. i loved mine for a week and now hate it. I also wish I had skipped the whole analog size 510 - they're really terrible unless you want something tiny. You have to change batteries every 2 hours and the vapor production isn't satisfying to me.

Honestly, I'd go for a KGO! ~$45 for a 1000mah kit (I believe) and they hold consistently at ~3.7v under load. I was also VERY impressed with a friend's Cig2O which is KR808 based. I'd HIGHLY recommend that as well... blew me away with clouds of warm thick vapor considering it's analog-sized. The Cig2O's and prefilled cartos can be had at most tobacco shops around here anyways.

My sister is now wanting to purchase a PV after seeing how much I enjoy my Ego-T. I am recommending the Ego-T to her but I know there are so many choices out there. She isn't the kind that's going to do any mods or even dripping for that matter. What do ya'll think is the best starter kit out there? Is it still the 510?

RN4081 websites claim that it is still the most popular ecig.

egos are very introductory, they put out like 3.6 volts which your gonna be sucking on it until your face is blue just to get puff, look for a 5 volt mod, provari or reo grands are my favorite for a reason, and.. if she liked the ego she will eventually want to get something better, i had three egos all died within acouple months, not reliable dont listen to people on here that are still using egos...they dont put out a lot of vapor without a decent low resistance atomizer, after acouple days it gets weaker...look into getting a bottom feeder perhaps like a reo mini from reosmods, very simple to use and you dont have to mess with tanks or batteries that only last a few weeks, or look at http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-smoking-discussion/www.ecigarette-mods.com....even just a 5 volt box mod from madvapes.com, they even have a variable voltage box mod now for like 35 bucks or something, + acouple 14500 batteries + a charger, and your spending about the same as you would on an ego....

As was said in your first line, it is an introductory product, most people interested in vaping would be overwhelmed & may be put off if you give them too much information, it would be better if you let them ask the questions & make their own informed decision. I normally use a ProVari, but I started off on an eGo to satisfy my curiosity. I still carry around my eGo as well as my ProVari with some cartos for the curious. Like anything else, you don't tread into unknown territory without a little guidance or information. We want to leave a positive impression with those who might be interested.

Not trying to doubt your experience, just try looking at it from their perspective, having a tube mod or box mod for a beginner will leave them with more questions than enjoyment out of it.

Questions are a good place to start. :) Cartomizers replace the atomizer and cartridge. Obviously, you need a drip tip if you are going to drip juice directly on your atomizer, but a drip tip also makes it easier to use cartomizers because you don't have to pry off the little white cap to add some juice. It also keeps your lips from the heat. It's not absolutely necessary for cartos, but for a couple of bucks, it is handy for cartos.

There it is folks, you heard it on the web :)

Kidding Dave.
Should be pretty easy to search and find out what an 808D-1, or 808D-2 looks like and why they are different.

The little cigarette looking e-cigs, like the 4081, 510, 901, and the KR808D-1 are the ones a smoker probably sees first. Hopefully not on a Free Trial TV offer. These are simple enough for the Noob to evaluate the experience.
But the research shouldn't stop there. After searching the interweb, consuming many Googles, going youtubing, many think they have found the perfect e-cig, order it and then become disillusioned for some reason. They have no one to turn to, no other alternatives, many give up. For those people that can "get by" stress free on a little e-cig that's fine. But those that can get over the stigma of carrying a larger e-cig usually move up to an eGo or clone. A few move on after that to the more exclusive, larger, custom mods.
I think that the DSE-801 was the most popular e-cig back in 2008, the DSE 901 in 2009, the Joye 510 in 2010, and the eGo and clones in 2011.
Not the best, as there is no best, just most popular based on number of vendors selling these models.

I personally would recommend eGo-T 5-click batteries... preferably with Mega Dual Cartomizers (not the clear ones). The Megas are relatively cheap and seem to last forever with little fuss... they're also incredibly easy to refill and feel like a decent cigar (and no cones needed). I use eGo-T tanks cut off for filters to keep the liquid out of my mouth (and the little rubber stoppers that come with eGo-T tanks make great carto-condoms for sticking extra megas in my bag but you gotta trim the inside of them)... and I keep a 510 atomizer around when I want to drip-taste new flavors. I think you could put together a decent gift set of this for under $100.
