Just a guess, but if the flavors cut were mostly "desert" flavors, then maybe they were using Diacetyl. This is a flavoring agent to simulate butter, and has been linked to causing a rare lung disorder called "popcorn lung". This has been a controversial topic, and most manufacturers are eliminating products which use it.

My guess is that they probably had to cut back flavors in order to save money for the move from Seattle, WA to Arizona.

A large variety is nice, but as a person who is a bit overwhelmed by lots of choices, I prefer menus to be dialed down a notch, and for them to only offer their best flavors.

I tried probably around 25 flavors at MBV, and only liked about 2-3 of them. Getting the 2 or 3 I liked to taste good on the second order was another challenge I had.
