Hello. I quit vaping a few months ago because I was coughing all the time while vaping, no matter what I tried, so went back to cigarettes. I lost my job this week so I am back to vaping to save money, was getting tired of cigarettes anyway but need the nicotine.

My question is, does anyone here not inhale when they vape? How much nicotine is absorbed by the mouth? The vape is more satisfying for me when I inhale, and has better flavor, but I just don't think I can without coughing. It also often seems to sting my palate. I am thinking of going with high-pg liquid for more flavor, and higher nicotine, to compensate for not inhaling.

Much of the Nicotine can be absorbed in the mouth.

Your previous problem was likely device related. Vaping is a bit more of a science than people first realize.
Proper power
Proper wicking
Proper air flow
Proper e-liquid for the individual

Suggestions are tossed around like toilet paper on a lawn at Halloween. Unfortunately nailing what type or E-liquid mix, pv/vg percentage, flavoring, Nic levels an individual needs or can handle is very difficult.
I wonder often just how many people have raised VG levels that Masked the Nic impact and thought they were allergic to PG when they got relief.
Every aspect has a cause and effect on end results.

I have had e-liquids choke me in one device and found they work fine in a more airy setup. Go figure.

Take your time, hang in there and hope you find employment soon. Buy better gear and keep vaping.

I quit smoke too due to the cost. Before I quit I was smoking strong cigars, and with those, you simply can not inhale them. So I`m mostly a MTL hitter with very little inhale involved, it was my mouth (and sinus) that was adsorbing all the nic. I still vape the same way, just running it through the nasal passages, and inhaling very little. The mouth can and does absorb allot of the nic, so the short answer is YES, you can vape like this, and you are not alone.

The lungs are the largest mucous membranes in the human body. Nicotine is absorbed through mucous membranes. Not sure how the rumor that nic isn't absorbed through the lungs got started....

I'm pretty sure that someone said one day that since the vapor has larger particles than tobacco smoke, the lungs can't absorb it. Even though that is obviously just complete bullcrap, people believed it (because hey, everything you read on the Internet MUST be true, right? especially if a random person in a forum thread said it!). So others began sharing this completely ludicrous notion in other threads, and before you know it, it has been mentioned in dozens of threads on ECF and Reddit, that people have moved from "it is probably true" to "it must be true! I've read it in dozens of threads!" and now it has been accepted as fact.

My Mom's 65 and has COPD, and inhaling the vapor irritates her lungs tons more than smoking, but she's fine w/ the mouth thing. You're not alone, and I figure the less of ANYTHING other than clean air in the the lungs the better! :) I also only keep the vapor in my mouth, as I read those studies that windx mentioned. They made sense to me, said the nicotine particles are too large to be absorbed by the tiny pores in lungs, more readily absorbed thru oral/nasal membranes. They also said it takes longer for nicotine to be absorbed thru vaping due to the particle size, that's why you don't get the instant "buzz" like with a cigarette.

And keep in mind that "wisdom" is several years old, from back when the amount of vapor the devices of the time produced was pretty pathetic, with very incomplete atomization. So there was some kernel of truth to it. Back then. This is now.

I have tried basic ego sticks, vv/vw at all settings, the higher the setting the worse it is I believe because of the increased vapor. I have tried different combinations of vg/pg, and different tanks. The least coughing is with vg-only. If vg does indeed mask the nicotine, as someone said, that would confirm that I believe it is the nicotine that is irritating me. I can go in an e-cig shop and sample flavors and not cough, of course they usually contain 0 mg nicotine. But when I purchase a bottle and go home and vape I cough. I suspected it was sensitivity to the nicotine, although smoking doesn't make me cough.

How does vg mask the irritation of nicotine?

Just quit smoking completely and in a few days you should get used to the vape.

People told me to do all these things like increase VG, lower nic, etc. All this did was make me waste a bunch of money.

When you started smoking, I'm sure you choked. But then you got used to it. It's the same thing with vapor.

When I started, I just did mouth hits my very first day. Then I started to gradually bring it in my lungs. By day four, everything fell into place. I'm sure my throat healing from not smoking helped too.

nicotine hurts in large quantities. If making a lot of vapor, very little nicotine per ml is needed to get a decent amount of nicotine. It also destroys the flavor of almost any e-juice. Its kind of like adding tobasco. You could have a high class gourmet meal prepared at the finest restaurant in town, but if you dump multiple bottles of tobasco on it when it is served, the meal probably will not taste so great and might be difficult to finish.

And DaveSignal, I'm going to try cutting my nicotine since I think I am sensitive to it. I am at 12 mg now, going to go down to 6 or 9.

This happens to some people, myself included. My cough has all but disappeared but it lingered for quite some time. I originally was worried that vaping was causing the build up, but I no longer think that's all that was going on. I believe that the vapor does cause a bit of build up, but in such small amounts that healthy lungs wouldn't be affected by it. But, since most of us have lungs that aren't healthy (I smoked Newports for 10 years), the damaged "little hair things that catch what enters the lungs and help to work the crap back out" (idk what they are called) aren't working as they should and it will take a couple years of being smoke free before your lungs are working like a nonsmoker's lungs work. The longer I vape (or stay smoke free, rather), the better my lungs work and the less build up vaping produces. Or at least that's my take on the matter.
