Busy, busy, busy today, so I'm gonna skip the part where I talk about the quiz and stuff, and just get right to it! :)

Ready for a new Movie Quiz? Have a look below, figure out what you know, and post your answers!

Thread lurkers, this goes for you guys too!

*****

The thread will run its course for a week or so, and I'll bump it with hints and whatnot as needed. Answers will be posted when the time feels right.

There are eight screenshots below. Most of them should be fairly recognizable if you've seen the films. So, which of these movies can you identify?

Please answer with movie numbers only, not titles..

Clues and hints and stuff:

#1: This series-establishing film from 1962 is an adaptation of the 6th novel in the series about a fictional double naught spy. In the movie, the bikini-clad woman, played by Ursula Andress, was on the beach minding her own business and collecting shells before getting swept up in the action.

#2: Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this World War II, alternate history film. Despite the fact that this 2009 epic has a nearly identical title to a 1978 Italian movie, the only strong similarity they share is the WWII setting.

#3: The screenshot features Jon Stewart, as Professor Furlong, with a pen stuck in his eye. He is one of many familiar faces you'll see in this Robert Rodriguez-directed, 1998 horror movie, including: Salma Hayek, Elijah Wood, Piper Laurie, Josh Hartnett, and several others.

#4: That Pan Am pilot surrounded by beautiful stewardesses is con man Frank Abagnale, as portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. In this scene, he's using the stewardesses as human camouflage while trying to evade the FBI, who are hot on his trail. Tom Hanks plays an FBI agent who spends almost the entire movie pursuing Abagnale.

Hope these helped!

Here's your second set of hints:

#5: On the left is Kevin Kline, as the philandering owner of Joey Boca's Pizzeria. Next to him is one of the restaurant's employees, Devo, played by River Phoenix. When Joey's trusting wife, Rosalie, (played by Tracey Ullman), finally becomes aware of Joey's cheating ways, she conspires with her mother, and enlists the aid of Devo to arrange to kill Joey.

#6: Towards the end of this sometimes surreal 2000 Christian Bale film, the level of reality distortion reaches a fever pitch, and some truly bizarre events occur -- for example, an ATM demands to be fed a stray cat -- all of which serve to throw into question the legitimacy of the main character's experiences throughout the movie.

#7: That's Rick Moranis, just as he's about to becomes possessed by Vinz Clortho, the Keymaster. And Vinz Colrtho, as we all know, serves Gozer the Destructor.

#8: Danny Glover and Mel Gibson star in this 1987 buddy-cop flick, which is arguably the origin of the "I'm getting too old for this s**t" cliché/trope/idiom/meme.

Hope these helped!

These are great fun (even though it's rare that I recognize any of them)!

I know I've missed the last couple because I didn't see an announcement in the "funny pics" thread in The Lounge.
Yeah, I sometimes forget to mention it in that thread. I'll definitely make it a point to do so going forward.

Hm. I wonder if it might be worthwhile to set up a movie quiz notifications thread that updates whenever a new movie quiz is posted? Subscribe to that thread and never miss another new quiz thread.
Where would such a thread be set up? In fact, I'd appreciate any elaboration you'd care to provide. I tend to only make the most basic use of forum tools and features in pretty much any of the forums I frequent, so these things are mostly unfamiliar to me.

I'm afraid that an update thread wouldn't work for me -- I never subscribe to threads.

Putting a link in the "funny pics" thread is nice, but if a new one was just mentioned, I'd come to this board and look for it.

(I don't visit this forum often because I'm sure the vendor is great and all, but they don't carry any hardware I can use. (I like to buy juice and cartos at the same time.))

Edit: Oh, and just so you'll know what kind of movies I'd probably recognize, I stole your format:

To make it easy, they're all from 1932 except #1 and #8.
:)

    in a cave, eh?
Ah, well. The update thread was only a suggestion. I was wondering if it might get more attention in the Lounge section and you'd go to: Thread Tools -> Subscribe to this Thread...

    http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/lounge/

I tend to go to the threads I've already subscribed to when I visit this forum and don't often check for new threads.

    Nicely done, FantWriter. :)

I don't generally use movies that are quite that old. I'm familiar with a lot of the old classics, having watched them years ago on TV. But, in many cases I don't remember the movies well enough to know which scenes would make for relatively easy identification in a quiz. Usually, if you see me use an old movie in a quiz, it's because I've recently re-watched it.

    I got 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8, BTW. :D

As mentioned above, I never subscribe to threads. Here at the ECF, in areas other than the FSUSA section and the Lounge, I mostly just poke around, looking for interesting threads to lurk in.

Actually, the first three or four Movie Quiz threads I made were posted in the Lounge. But, there seemed to be a general lack of interest there; the threads were nearly devoid of responses, and pretty light on views.

I didn't think anyone but me remembered the truly great movies! :)

#2 is Jewel Robbery. When William Powell robs a jewelry store, he has the owner and guard smoke his special cigarettes so they won't be reliable witnesses. Kay Francis is a hedonistic young thing whose ring he steals.

#6 is Arsene Lupin. John Barrymore is a dashing thief. Lionel Barrymore is the police inspector trying to catch him. Karen Morley is the nubile young thing he uses for bait. It shows a really neat way to steal the Mona Lisa!

#7 is Penguin Pool Murder. Edna May Oliver is schoolteacher Hildegard Withers. She inserts herself in a murder investigation carried out by James Gleason. In the scene depicted, she's asking a secretary about a phone call:
Hildegard: Are you sure it was a man?'
Secretary: No woman would call me baby, would she?
Hildegard: No, not this far uptown.

I don't understand the prejudice most people have against classic films. There were thousands of great movies made before 1966. We're lucky if there's one or two good new ones each year.

Well, for The Mummy, Fu Manchu, and Some Like It Hot, (#3, #5, and #8, respectively), you used dead-giveaway screenshots. So, those were pretty easy. I last saw #1, Double Indemnity, probably less than 10 years ago. So once I spotted Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck, I knew the film.

FWIW, it took an introduction to the Marx Brothers -- and subsequently watching all of their movies -- to get my kids past their initial reluctance to watch any black and white movies. I've been slowly introducing them to other classics ever since.

Although it's not black and white, thus not directly related to the topic at hand, I'm thrilled by the fact that one of my 11-year-old daughter's favorite movies (so far) has been The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. That's been one of my top 5 all-time favorites for almost as long as I can remember! :)
