How much should I expect to pay for a digital multimeter? Fluke is right out, can't afford.

You don't need all that much accuracy or versatility from a multimeter for most vaping purposes. A $15 dollar multimeter will do. Better meters for under $50 may be useful for other DIY tasks.
Here's a great little meter. I've got one I use regularly, and it really is a good working device.

Wonn't measure current (amps,), though. Most small inexpensive meters fall short in this category.

I've been using a $10 multimeter for over two years now and it has always done exactly what I've needed it to do for vaping purposes

Don't sell the farm for a DMM for vaping. On the other hand, if can you spend a little more you can get some benefits.
-More functions. The test probes may plug into multiple sockets
-Better accuracy
-Better battery. Most inexpensive DMMs use 9 V batteries. The cheapies use a mini 9 V battery that doesn't last more than a couple of months. A pair of replacement batteries (often, you can only buy two) may cost more than the DMM itself. DMMs that use the standard 9 V alkaline battery are a better deal all round. These are the familiar, larger rectangular 9 V batteries with the two snap-on contacts. They cost a lot less at any drug or grocery store and last for months and months.

i got one for 8 bucks, and a 5 pack of batteries for it for 5 bucks. just dont leave it on overnight like i keep doing.
LOL ... glad to hear I'm not the only one who forgets. I've had several DMM, and I've always wondered why the things don't have a simple off-on switch. All the ones I've had (and currently have) have "Off" as one position on the rotary switch (usually at the top) but the functions I use most (battery test and ohms) are usually at the bottom ... it's sometimes really awkward to twist the rotary switch from 6:00 to noon to turn the meter off, especially when I'm holding something in one hand and trying to do it one-handed with the other. So, I think, I'll turn it off later ... hah!
Look for one with automatic shutoff. Saves batteries for later. Not all meters have this feature.
