My DIY e-juice tastes bland

Hello everyone :)

New to the forum here, so I'll just jump right in. For Christmas my girlfriend gave me a whole bunch of DIY e-juice supplies from Wizard Labs. Anywho, long story short I put together a couple of juices and unfortunately they each taste bland.

Not only do my juices lack flavor, but they also have a slight chemical taste to them on the exhale. I'll break down what I've done so far:
(All juices I've made thus far have been a 60/40 VG/PG mix and have 0 nicotine content)

1) Watermelon - 15% flavor with only Watermelon by LA.
This one actually tastes better than the next one I'll list, however it still lacks a strong flavor and has a slight hint of the chemical taste that I mentioned earlier.
I've let it steep for one week now, with three separate breathing periods of approximately 8 hours each with about one day between each breathing period.
The flavor has not changed since I first mixed this juice. Perhaps I'm using too much flavor? Perhaps I'm a complete numbskull?

2) Chocolate Strawberries with Marshmallow as sweetener - 20% mix with 10% Strawberry by LA, 5% Marshmallow by Cap and 5% Chocolate by TFA.
This one is extremely bland, with only a hint of strawberry and an even smaller hint of chocolate. However, there is a mildly strong chemical flavor.
This mix has been through the same steeping process as the one above and the smell has gotten better with each passing day. Just not the flavor.

I've followed steeping instructions strictly, only steeping in a dark cool place (a cabinet), and I'm shaking the crap out these mixes at least five to six times daily.

Please help me out here, as this is very demotivating. Also, I'm looking forward to making a new Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble flavor sometime in the next few days, so feel free to give your :2c:.

BTW: for anyone who wants to know, I'm testing these flavors in a Stillare clone rda with a single coil build at around .5 ohms. I use a Cartel copper mod with an Imren 2600mAH 18650 battery (not that it makes a difference?).

The diy forum is chock full of good recipes as well as top notch diyers. Its easy to hate diy when you start from nothing. Things that sound good in your head don't necessarily translate into a good juice. Also, some companies just make crap flavors. Don't get frustrated, do a lot of reading in the diy forum and keep trying. I haven't bought a bottle of juice in over a year. Custards are my thing and Capella is a great place to start if you like them. Good luck and welcome!

Sometimes if you use too much flavor it will cancel itself out and you won't taste it. Start with 1 flavor mixes at 5% or thereabouts till you get one you like. Then you can add additions to it. La flavors are sometimes quite weak. For fruits I add a drop or two of lemon juice to the mix. There is a whole DIY section with recipes on the forum.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to take you guys' advice and start by making juices with 5% flavor. Should I need more, I'll just add to it.

I knew that since I'm new to the whole DIY scene, that I wouldn't have any stellar juices right off the bat, but with the advice you've all provided in addition to the amount of research I'm preparing myself to do, I think I'll be alright.

to ecf QuiltyBananas. Nice to meet you and so glad you are here. Lots and lots of great threads on DIY. I always start out way below what the recommended percentage is. Sometimes when you get on up there, the flavor will be diminished rather than enhanced. Here are a couple of good site to read.

Hiya, QuiltyBananas and welcome to ECF!

Haven't tried DIY'ing myself yet, but from what I've been reading about it, the "less is more" advice above seems to be what the experienced folks in the DIY section are saying.

Anyway, here is a link to the DIY Recipes section:

Good luck with your DIY'ing, and Happy Vaping!

(BTW, can I be your taste tester? )
