I think she may be a ....., but if she's not, it's been fun. This is a great forum with very nice people and I haven't been here very long at all but on the off chance she's right I just wanted to say thank you. Long before I joined, I was reading the posts for vape information.

I never managed to quit smoking but and I don't know what mystery illness is going to strike me down. This seems very dubious to me. I dunno, but the b#&% keeps telling me I'm going to die though. I might just have an awful doctor who needs firing. Because this doesn't make any sense. It's panicking me though.

So on the off chance my ....ty doctor isn't just yanking my chain, I wanted to say thank you and goodbye.

Umm, your doctor told you you were dying with no proof? WHA? I would not have left that office without proof of my imminent death (though on the other hand, I might not want to stick around too long, she doesn't sound ah, very receptive to logic). Has this person been your doctor long?

I've had docs tell me I *would* die if I kept smoking the way I did but this was so obvious, I didn't request proof, LOL. They're ALL happy I'm vaping.

Is your doc misinformed, perhaps, and maybe now is the time to switch docs? One time I had a cardiologist tell me I'd already had heart attack (or, alternatively, my EKG lead placement was bad). I couldn't get imaged or whatever for 2 weeks, it was a really stressful 2 weeks. My imaging was fine, no heart attack, but I was also like, "WAH?" you lay that on a person and then escort them out the door?

I'm really hoping that you aren't dying, Brad888. At least, not more rapidly than we all are. :) Sorry to hear about your doc and if you genuinely have an illness, I hope it gets treated, correctly? I got the impression your doc was just spouting smoke, but if not... I hope it goes all okay.

Perhaps she meant if you keep smoking cigarettes you would eventually die from a smoking related illness. A sorta "scared straight" approach, but not every doctor has the best approach for motivating you, and there is a higher chance of dying earlier as a smoker vs. a nonsmoker. If she found a fatal illness on examination, then all I can do express my sympathy and hope some treatment may help even if not cure.

I don't know what to say... I'm stunned by your post and you don't have any information? Just a statement like that with nothing else? Makes no sense. Please see a different Dr. or go to an ER to find out exactly what might be going on with you and get answers.

Your Drs. bedside manner leaves something to be desired.

Yeah, docs can get a bit... strange these days when it comes to smoking, since she didn't give you a diagnosable illness, I'm hoping this is scare tactics. Scare tactics boomerang for me, I don't get scared but I do get angry, so I would've smoked MORE after that dang appointment. The only time I truly felt bad for my PCP was when he could GENUINELY see from my chart that I had been pretty hoarse to the point speaking was difficult for 8 mo, he went WHITE (my other PCP, shared practice, thought it was allergies) and sent me Do not Pass Go to an ENT (who, to be fair, when I told the receptionist my address she said, "Where are you?" and I started telling her my address, and she was like, "No, what are your cross streets?" then told me she'd see me in 20 minutes and I got scoped ASAP.) BUT, I was the one reassuring my PCP, I was like, "Dude, you know I've earned throat cancer if so and to be honest I didn't think I'd live this long ALREADY." My PCP is a total sweetheart, though. I called him right after the scoping and he was SO RELIEVED.

And, it still took me several months to quit. By all rights, my docs should have been way meaner, but they weren't. It would not have worked, either. So, there are good docs out there who understand tobacco addiction and what it can do to people.

Yes, I'd say keep dual using until you are ready to switch, DO NOT give up. Find another doc if you can, ASAP. There are good ones out there.

Death sentences usually come with a diagnosis, for instance, like cancer, and for instance, with some kind of time frame such as, 12 months to live. They also come with a treatment plan, even if they think you have only a short time to live, such as, chemo won't save your life, but perhaps it could prolong your life by another 6 months to a year, would you like to try it?

I'd honestly find me a new doctor, perhaps one who will explain to you anything about why this one might be saying such things.

However, new doctors opinion aside, we are all dying the second we are born. How long each of us has to live is anyone's guess.

Even if the Doctor was trying to tell you that Smoking was decreasing your life span, that doctor blew it.

I have had the same doctor for about 20 years. He has treated me for high blood pressure and gotten that under control with getting me to exercise more, take a daily medication and lose some weight.

He told me numerous times that the biggest threat to my health was smoking and that I needed to stop it. He also told me that that smoking was one of the main causes of the high blood pressure.

I switched to vaping and haven't smoked since. He was right, I think at least. My health has improved dramatically without smoking. My blood pressure even dropped. Still on medication for it but the dose has been decreased of the medication. I fill better overall, don't get as tired when busy or exercising and sleep better at night.

The doctor knows I switched to vaping. His opinion. Don't go back to smoking.

I remember once having a conversation with my Climbing Partner about Dying with standing on a ledge Contemplating the exposure. He told me that there was Nothing to be afraid of Dying. That everyone is going to Do It sooner or later.

What, though, I should be Afraid of is Dying with things left Undone or Unsaid.

Maybe Today would be a Good Day to call that person and tell them How Much you Really Care about them? Or to see how they are Doing? Or maybe to Make that Amends?

Sometimes people do not hear or key in on everything that is said. Misunderstandings are not uncommon. It would be nice if the OP returned to clarify this, but as a new member since the end of last week and who according to his profile is 36 years old, makes this whole thing sound like an amazingly incomplete story.

Agreed. I just hope the guy isn't off smoking and drinking shots of whisky due to his "death sentence" and comes back. :( I mean, he said he was lurking forever.

Still, medical professionals need to have people skills, just like the rest of us. If the guy has that many negative feelings after the appointment, it did not go right :(

At the age of 17 I was assured that I wouldn't live to see 21. At the age of 25 I gave up listening to doctors. Now at the ripe young age of 63 I can look back just a couple years to the last time a doctor layed the 'I'm talkin to a dead man' look on me. Took all I had to keep from laughing in his face! We're all gonna die, I've been ready for 42 years now.
