I started this adventure approximately one month ago. I had read some things on line on another forum from people having success using E-Cigs to help them stop smoking. One day I decided to stop by a shop that was mentioned in that thread and see what I could find.
I knew about the “mods” and such but that was not my intention and way off the radar, I just wanted to stop smoking. I had decided that I did not want to spend much money but would rather not buy the cheapest thing they had as my experience with the cheep convenience store e-cigs had been a waste of money.

I stopped in and was greeted right away and we spoke about what I was wanting. The sales person behind the counter said we should first find a juice that I liked and then we would talk about the devices. Picking the juice was much harder than I had thought it would be. I did not want a tobacco flavor because that was what I wanted to get away from and after testing many flavors I was even more confused as none seemed to be what I had hoped for. I finally went with the first one I tried and we were off.

I spent maybe 30 dollars more than I planned that afternoon. I walked away with two EVOD VV 1600 EGO batteries and two T3D tanks, a case, a charger with the wall plug device and a bottle of juice. I have come to find that the price I paid was a good deal when compared to what other shops price a similar set for.

Since that day I have visited many other shops with varying degrees of experience but over all I guess they were ok. At one shop I went in on a Friday night after a 30 mile drive to get there. I went in to test some juice and see what they had. I was then passed off to three different people behind the counter and each time I had to explain what I was looking for in flavors. This was frustrating as a noob to all of this. At a couple of other shops, they have all this equipment out on display and none of it has any price tag or description posted with it, again very frustrating.

I have found one shop that stays open until midnight on Friday and Saturday and decided to go on a Saturday afternoon and see what was happening. I arrived at the shop around 6:30pm and went in. They have a small stage set up with a guitar amp and a couple of guitars hanging on the wall. They advertise an open mic type of deal and had a small PA system set up. I was greeted right away and I told them I was just looking right now. I was always being asked by someone if I need help. It seemed that they had five or six people on staff at the time. I began to ask questions about what happened on these nights and was told they have a CLOUD contest scheduled at 9pm and that people would start showing up around 8 for that. It was something they do every Saturday night and was free to enter and the prize for 1st thru 3rd place was a bottle of juice. I asked a lots of questions and tested a lot of juice and by the time 9pm came the store was in a massive cloud, almost too much for me, as soon as the competition was over I had to get out for some fresh air. There were maybe 20 to 25 people plus the staff in the store for this with a steady flow of regular customers coming and going. The crowd as expected was fairly young. It was way outside my demographic, one guy brought some electronic equipment in with a laptop and played what I assume was some of his own electronic music. It’s not my thing but the beats were good. It was a good night and I was away from the house for a few hours. The price for juice is a bit high in my opinion but I guess they have to pay all these people and keep the lights on soooooo.

I have had good service at a couple of other shops and people that will help you if you know the questions to ask and if they have the staff to cover the business.

This is I guess my biggest complaint. The area I live in is a huge metropolitan area. I live out in the sticks 30 miles from most of this but I have found that no one or at least there is no group that has any organized get together on any consistent basis. In the past month I went from the EGO started kit to now owning 2 mechanical mods, an MVP 2, a VAMO v6 and all the items needed to use these devices and a starter set up for DIY juice. This was all by my choice but what I think some of these larger shops need is E-Cig Ambassadors, someone to greet you when you come in the store to talk to you about what you are looking for and will give you the attention needed to get you where you want to be. I don’t know what questions to ask and I don’t want to have someone just trying to sell me something or is the only person on staff to deal with other customers while you try to understand what you are looking at. Maybe have monthly noob meets and advertise them. Tell those that you sell product to about them if they are new to this. One shop here had a class on building coils a week or so back, carry this further and get people with others that can answer some questions or at least tell their experience. Have this in your shop if you have room or maybe find a place that will allow vaping and have it away from the shop.

This forum has lots of information but I have found that its information overload. I read some of this stuff and have even more questions. I may even have seen the answer to my question but it gets lost in the overload. I don’t know a single person that vapes other than those I have met in the shops so I am on my own here and would like to find other likeminded people that may have other interest that match mine and maybe strike up friendships and be able to pass along the experience.

Was this a Rant? I don't know! Anyway :vapor:

I think that a lot of us, regardless of where we are in the world, will agree with you about your issue about lack of information in vape shops. There are four shops local to me (meaning I can ride my bicycle for under 30 minutes and get there), three of which have that issue. They have all the things lying around on racks, no labels, nothing. I can spot by eye and know what all of it is, but to the discerning newcomer, that would be a bit... disconcerting. Not only that, juices are super overpriced, the ego stick batteries they were selling were mostly discharged beyond recovery, and the tanks and drippers and RSST's were kept locked away in a back room.
Then there is the fourth store. It is by far the closest to where I live currently (5 minute ride away), they charge $9 per 15ml bottle of juice, with possible discounts if you bring back empty previous glass 15ml bottles to recycle, $18 per 35ml, and $50-ish for 120ml bottles. As a newer store, the only employees there are the co-owners of the store, who are always ready to greet someone walking in the door whether or not they're tied down with customers at the desk. The decor is a bit spartan, but the amount of knowledge between me and the two of them is usually more than enough for novice vapers and veteran cloudchasers alike.
You're not the first person to notice this trend in vape shops. ;)

As for questions, as long as you have questions and can't find answers, just ask here at ECF, whether it's in the apv forum or the new member forum or wherever. A hive mind like here is more likely to give you a more comprehensive answer than one individual or several individuals at a store. And plus, we're only here to help you, not sell you stuff. The vaping learning curve is a steep one.

Good luck and happy vaping!

I have 2 ecig shops close to where I live (5min walk) and I have only had good experiences so far.
There are many more shops in my city that I haven't tried yet. One of them downtown is so popular there is even a lineup outside all day!
The shops in my city usually have a vaping area with a sofas and chairs, but I haven't seen many customers using the vaping areas.

The tech and culture is moving very fast this year...on top of that it's diversifying as well. It's harder to find your place today than it was even a year ago.

You're in good hands here at ecf. I've learned 95% of what I know here from following the discussions. Be patient and you'll catch up!

As for vape shops, I've never needed them. I began ordering online long before the first vape shops in my area opened.

I have learned almost everything I know of vaping from ECF and to some extent from google and youtube. I know I can not go wrong when visiting a local shop. In fact, at some of them, I have to bite my tongue so as not to get riled at the not so good advice I have received.

I have found that I do like to visit a couple of the local shops just to hang out. Sort of like going to a bar. I always try to purchase something at the shops I like, be it a couple of coils, juice or something that may be on sale. I look at the purchase as a "cover charge" for the entertainment of being there.

Hey, Fatkat! :) Your demographic is probably different than mine too! I just started with finding info on the internet 15 mos. ago when I really had to search for nearby shops. During this past yr. 12-14 have opened up in our town and found out about local vape meets which we are fortunate to have here. And I've even driven 2 1/2 hrs to Knoxville for theirs, but I'm getting too old to "boogie", then drive back home in the dead of night.

All I can tell you is to do your research and most questions you have can be answered here. All this confusing info will sort itself out and make sense in time. The now many shops I visit are only to pick up juices I favor or try their new ones and gab a bit. Although, anywhere I go I've been treated kindly and with patience, I get better and more accurate info here.....also can take my time to absorb it. My learning to buy gear on line was a big plus, and joining Facebook to find out what is happening at various shops and the local vape club.

I smoked for 53 yrs and most of that time alone. Vaping is much more enjoyable, and I will dang well vape alone (which I am most of the time) if I have to......although there's this smoking youngster of 62 next door......:D

I've learned everything about vaping from here and youtube, and I've only been at it around two weeks. When I went to the local B&M they had none of the items that were suggested here (some of the items that I'd asked about drew blank stares). I do think as the culture and equipment matures things will get better at small local shops.

I'm just glad to hear that you're working on getting off of the cigarettes, always a worthy journey even though it might get a little tough sometimes. I'd say at least with the vape route of quitting smoking, there are FUN ways to kick the habit and enough options to satisfy just about anything (for a price!)

Thanks for the replies! I know the information is here and some of it needs to be put in terms anyone can understand. For example when it comes to batteries, I have noticed that not many if any have anything good to say about the Efest. There may be good reason for this and I will not argue about it. My issue is someone comes here and says these should be avoided in certain circumstances and they go on about the reason why they think that but make no recommendation for a different battery and the reason for that. I asked about these at a vape shop on Saturday but the person behind the counter seemed to know nothing about issues and recommended them. Don't tell me what I bought is junk and not tell me what I should look for and why.

Now on to happier things, My Nemesis Copper Clone came today from Fasttech. Man this thing hits like a Mack Truck!!!!. The button is a little rough but I can buy the magnet kit for that but at least it don't get so hot you can't hold it like the Sigelei 19 I bought. I have a button kit coming for it but it seems the USPS has lost the package at this point.

I put my Nimbus on the Nemesis but the .3ohm duel coil gets way to hot. I put my Smoktech Caterpillar on it with a .7ohm dual coil and all air hole open and its great. I may just have to go enter a Cloud Contest with it and show all them youngun's how its done :)

I am on day 8 without a cigarette and it has been getting harder and harder to not stop and buy a pack.

Ok, I’m going to go practice making clouds and then go to bed. 4am gets here early.

I actually started with 12 nic and am now using 3 and 6. I still have plenty of juice with higher nic levels. I even had to go get some tobacco flavor to help with that urge to have a smoke. I had to sweeten them to make them where I could use it and the two flavors I have are in 12 and 18 nic levels.

I have found my taste in juice is changing, I started with a sweeter fruit / candy flavors but I am now moving to sweet creamy flavors. I'm going to have to figure out how to mix this myself because the store bought flavors are just too high priced. One of the shops I have found flavors I like has a flavor of the week and has 15ml bottles for $4.99 and I have started picking up a bottle every week to get to other flavors even if I don't care for it in the end.
