My first mod! (That I made anyway)

Hi there!

So after a few months of just vaping and not really thinking about it, I got the itch for something new and I decided to make my own mod. I went with a pipe mod... I had a spare 510 connector laying around from a broken box mod that I had and I have always been good with electronics / soldering and whatnot so I said what the heck.

I bought a wooden pipe from a local analog shop, I can't recall the brand but I'd bet its just your average generic analog shop pipe. It cost around 15 bucks. I had a set of battery connectors from the same broken box mod, so that was a plus.

I started by hollowing out the pipe bowl with a dremel. It took a TON of grinding, but I finally got it deep enough to house a spring and a 16340 sized battery comfortably.

I played around with a few ideas for switches... I tried a cap button, but it turned out I didn't really have enough room above the battery to house a proper switch. I wound up mounting the switch in the side and using a small round single sided PCB that I got from radio shack. After wiring it all together I hot glued it in place, and it was in the absolute perfect spot, right under my right thumb or my left pointer finger - depending on which hand I was holding it with.

I mounted a contact one quarter of the way around the bowl to the front. This was intended to make contact with the 7/16ths metal cap I found at lowes.

I mounted the 510 connector at the end of the pipe neck, to allow me to directly attach a tank, though I could have just as easily embedded the connector in the stem and used an extension (I don't actually have an extension as of yet lol... I'm somewhat impatient!).

I took the mouthpiece that came with the pipe, and removed the insert portion, dremel'd (lol look at me making up words) out a hole the size of a drip tip and took one of the old drip tips that I had, dremel'd off the front 2/3rds of it and glued the driptip into the mouthpiece.

All in all I'd say about 25-30 bucks in parts for a descent little mod.

My big issue? I'm so scared to use it! lol I have tested and retested it with my meter and there are no shorts, or breaks, or poor connections... no improperly placed resistance or anything like that. I think it is just because it is my first mod that I'm sort of freaked out lol.

Anyone else get the first mod jitters?

I'm using an AW IMR 16340 battery, it fires just fine and works well. I am almost obsessively careful with my batteries and since I've not got an off switch I take it out of the mod when I'm not using it.

If there is any interest I can probably post a pic, but I just wanted to share my story and see if anyone else had any jitters using their first home-made mod? Anyone make their own e pipes? Any tips?

Man that wound up longer than I thought it would be lol.

It is actually working very well, I use it intermittently, especially when programming because I can just hold it with my teeth and don't have to fumble around and knock things over =D

I've actually started working on a second one, trying to iron out some of the smaller issues that I have had. For example: I don't like the cap, its clunky and just doesn't flow. I placed the button a bit too high, the circuit and everything behind the button are sort of sticking out, not in the way, just looks hokey.

All in all it was a great learning experience, and I'll post pics of my second one when I get it built!

Oh and one thing I'd *love love love* to do is get one of those air activated switches. That would be too cool I think lol...

Soon my friend, very soon~~~~ Master Raidy will be marketing his newest invention. it uses a programmable barometric pressure switch. not only does it turn on/off when you draw on it , it adjusts the amount of vapour depending on how light/hard you pull on it.

@kempo:

Thanks! It is actually one of the DCT tanks, I cut the tube to fit a boge carto... what actually fits this pipe REALLY nicely is the slim 3mil DCT tanks, they are the perfect size for it.

@tumus : Thanks!

@gummybear : That is horribly awesome, I'll have to get in line for one of those.

I'm pretty much done with my second... unfortunately I had some snafus that made it not very photo worthy (broke the pipe neck a bit due to misapplication of force >.< super glue to the rescue!)

This one I made by insetting the carto about 85% into the neck, this allows for the mouthpiece to fit over the end and everything to look as normal as possible. I made my own custom extension with a carto casing I wasn't using to test with a meter and whatnot.

I'm honestly not terribly sure I like the inset carto, I really love my first one and the tank-a-bility of it.

Anyway, I'll post a few pics of the second one, broken or not it was still a fun build =D
