So Im wanting a RBA. Ive been vaping since October and haven't paid much attention since I simply change the coil when it gets burny and keep vaping.
I want to be more in control of my vaping. Im going to keep using my tank while Im out and about but considering an RDA or RTA while at home.
I have a friend willing to show me how to build my first coil, and I plan on asking her as well.
What brand and style (RTA/RDA) would you recommend for a beginner?
Also where can I learn the terminology so I am not confused while reading up on this?

What type of power supply/mods are you using? That would help to know. Are you in the market for a mod as well or just a tank/dripper?
I am currently using a MVP2 that a friend gave me. Im considering sticking with that for awhile as Ive had no issues.

Make sure you have an ohm reader and understand how to use it. There are a thousand references here if you use the search bar. As far as a topper to start with, it depends on what you want out of it. Clouds? Flavor?
I am planning on getting a reader, no worries. Im all about the safety.
Can I have both? My current tank (Innokin iClear 30 S) is cheap but it works. Flavor is priority though.

Some RDA's have good flavor, but a tight draw (Tugboat for example). You will get flavor, but smaller clouds. Some like the Dark Horse or CLT have massive air flow for big clouds, but the extra air mutes flavor. RTA's are generally better for flavor, but don't make huge clouds (just a generality. some will do both.) Do you want to drip juice every few hits or have a tank to feed for hours is the biggest question I think.

Something like the kanger subtank mini is good due to having a rebuildable section and one for prebuilt coils.
Or a similar type tank , just pick that one because I have one.
Can have a go at rebuilding and if having difficulties just put in a prebuilt coil.

Don't have any but the mvp and ipv mods seem to be liked by those that have them.
Sigelei mods are good , my one never gave me any problems.

Decide what resistance you want to vape now and possibly in the future and check any mod your interested will be able to fire at that resistance.
Mostly an issue when you want to go below 0.5Ω. Though still many that won't fire below 1Ω.

I've read about issues with the 50w iStick. I think they worked them all out, but I'm not sure. If you want to use a dripper, I would definitely say 50W is your low benchmark. Mods are all about style and feel, so I would go to a B&M and hold a few and see what you like. For a topper... Maybe a Delta 2 or Kanger subtank would be a good starter for you. They both have a rebuildable head (sold separately). You can buy pre-made coils to use while you are getting the hang of building and you won't need a separate tank. I don't own either of those, but I have sampled "testers" at the B&M and seem to like the Delta 2 better. If you just want to jump right in to building...Drippers are pretty inexpensive ($20 - $30) but there is a learning curve with dual coil builds. If flavor is #1, look for something with less airflow (tugboat for example). For a RTA, I would say a Kayfun is a good choice.

Welcome Whipple!

I built a number of coils for my kayfuns and ran them on my MVP2. You will have to keep the resistance up (my best range was about 1.6-2.0 ohms) I use 28 or 30g kanthal and a 3/32" bit for my kayfuns. You would be o.k. with what you currently have, if you're not up for springing for a newer mod.

The MVP typically doesn't fire below 1.2 ohms, although I have seen folks who get theirs to fire as low as 0.8 ohms. I personally never tried on mine. It would be a strain on the MVP for sure.

Take a gander at Baditude's blogs. He has a lot of information on Ohm's and Watt's Laws, which will come in handy as you learn this new art.

A subtank mini or plus should interest you; you can use it like the conventional clearomizer or you can use the optional rba heads.

If you get an separate rda, which is worth doing, keep in mind an rda is really a simple device and ought not be expensive at all; the only good reason to spend a bunch on an rda is because you half 3 or 10 already and know so much about rda's that when you see one that actually has most of the things you look for in an rda your eyes go wide.

some popular rda's are
plume veil, doge, magma, tugboat; there are tons.

most rda's are 22mm.

my old eyes and unsteady fingers end up on my 30mm veritas

I've got the old Mvp v2, that poor thing will BARELY fire subtanks with the 1.5 coil. I'd look to the Kanger Subox setup honestly, you'll get everything you need but battery and charger. Solid setup with power enough for dripping should you feel inclined.
only issue with the subox is going to be that with the fixed pin in the 510 connection, it gets a little persnickety with some of my drippers... for a great rda, though would echo hitcat's suggestion for the compvapes - i have the el cabron, the twisted messes, and the 13 heavens, all excellent, all very well built - twisted messes might be a bit easier to build on for a new coil builder, with the split center post... may want to check out the smok m80 for mods - prices have come way down on them since they have a new release coming (smok x cube II) in July...

Just a simple reply...

I LOVE my Dark horse rda. Was my first build and it was amazing both in flavor and cloud production. You can adjust the airflow quite a bit on it and get more flavor with somewhat smaller clouds but since its a dual coild build i find it vapes great at around .6 all the way up to 1.4 ( the highest ive had it yet). I also have an Orchid v5 but im not a big fan of the airflow on that one. Just doesn't do it for me. Give the Dark Horse a try!
