Absolutely no reason whatsoever to use unprotected batteries. Every time I hear someone talking about using unprotected batteries I think about the thread where the guy was using unprotected batteries in his hi-drain style flashlight. He took the batts off the charger, put them in his flashlight, turned it on and it blew up in his hand. Literally. The guy escaped without major injury but he was injured. The flashlight was peeled back like a banana. Is it really worth it? We put these devices up to our face and mouth. He simply had his flashlight in his hand.
The fuse upgrade for GGTS has already saved me a battery (at the least) because I had a short in my iAtty and the spring melted, thus saving perhaps my mod but definitely my battery.
I've decided I'm using my Provari as a short detector until the VV comes out. I'm hoping that short protection is a standard feature.
