Absolutely no reason whatsoever to use unprotected batteries. Every time I hear someone talking about using unprotected batteries I think about the thread where the guy was using unprotected batteries in his hi-drain style flashlight. He took the batts off the charger, put them in his flashlight, turned it on and it blew up in his hand. Literally. The guy escaped without major injury but he was injured. The flashlight was peeled back like a banana. Is it really worth it? We put these devices up to our face and mouth. He simply had his flashlight in his hand.

The fuse upgrade for GGTS has already saved me a battery (at the least) because I had a short in my iAtty and the spring melted, thus saving perhaps my mod but definitely my battery.

I've decided I'm using my Provari as a short detector until the VV comes out. I'm hoping that short protection is a standard feature.

If it blew up as soon as he hit the switch, it sounds like he (re)charged primary batteries. Unprotected batteries can explode, but it generally takes at least a little while for the thermal runaway to get going enough to cause them to vent and the gas to build up. (Re)charging primary batteries (batteries not made to be recharged) can result in catastrophic failure as soon as a circuit is compleated. For what it's worth, protected batteries can explode as well, the protection just makes it less likely.

And in this forum "unprotected batteries" generally means the "safer chemistry" batteries that are at least as safe from catastrophic failure as protected batteries. LiFePO and IMR's are not any more likely to explode than protected Li-Ion, you just need to be a bit more careful not to over drain them and to make sure your charger has an auto-cutoff when they are fully charged.

Me too. Got my iatty and fuse upgrade at the same time. Put everything together and tried to vape. Nada! Huh? Bottom section slightly warm. Removed fuse and springs were melted. Turned out my coil was a little too high in the cup and shorting out against the cone. Easy fix but it coulda been a bad scene without that fuse.
