A report that I saw on the Today Show really fired me up. I sent them the following correspondence. It would be great if others watched it and followed suit:
I have been a fan of the Today Show for some time and it's always been my morning show of choice. I always felt that the hosts and reporters were honest and forthcoming as well as doing their best to provide factual reports on current issues.
However, I saw a recent report that I found both disappointing and disturbing (Alarm raised over poisoning risk from e-cigarettes - TODAY.com). This report is at best an example of poor research, or is at worst a deliberate attempt at fear mongering and misrepresentation of the facts. The toxic level of nicotine referred to in this report is not the level of nicotine used in the creation of e-liquid for use in electronic vaporizing devices.
I have used a personal vaporizing device to successfully quit smoking where all other methods have failed. I have accidentally spilled this liquid on myself numerous times in the beginning with no ill effects. After much personal research, I am unable to find any instance of death attributed to accidental nicotine overdose in the United States. Nicotine is an addictive substance that should be handled with care, however to paint it as being any more dangerous to children than other hazardous substances found in the home is both sensationalistic and irresponsible. e-liquid should be kept out the reach of children in the same way that we would keep them from consuming alcohol, narcotics or even vitamins for children that are shaped like candy. To inhibit the use of e-liquid by responsible adults due to the lack of responsible parenting of a few is both unfair and an infringement on personal freedoms. Reporting such as this only adds to the unjustified growing public fear of the use of e-liquid.
I would hope that in the future, NBC and the producers of the Today Show will put more thought into the message they are trying to convey to the public instead of echoing what appears to be a desire to control the actions of responsible tax paying adults. Factual reporting is responsible reporting.
Sincerly,
BTW, their email add is :TodayStories@nbcuni.com
