I love retro. I wanted something that was a mix of classic WWII era cheesecake mixed with Buck Rodgers type SF. Found this amazing Ryan Heshka illustration and had my buddy Spike (Spike's Westside Ink - Aloha!) do the tattoo. He's an amazing artist. I'm really happy with how it turned out.
Nope. Didn't cry. Knocked back a couple shots, but no tears. I've got a really high pain tolerance due to suffering from cluster headaches (really bad migraines) for most of my life. Getting a few needle ...... on my arm was a walk in the park.
Yep. One sitting. The whole piece took about three and a half hours to finish. Personally, I'd prefer to stay around two hours for tattoo work, but I needed it all done on one day because I was in Hawaii and flying back the next day.
I grew up with the artist who did the actual tattoo. Spike (Spike's Westside Ink - Aloha!) has been a friend of mine since we were both about 12 years old. I've been wanting to have him put some ink on me for many years but he lives in Hawaii and I don't see him much these days. So, about five years ago I finally decided to have a big tat done by him. I searched for a design that would meet my ideal of what a cool tattoo should be (cheesecake girl in a 40's style but inflected with Buck Rodgers style sci-fi) and found a really interesting series of illustrations by an artist in Vancouver BC named Ryan Heshka. He did one of these for each of the planets. This one is Mercury. I loved it so much that I knew from the outset that it would be the design, but I sat on it for several years just to make 100% sure I wasn't going to get tired of it.
So, I guess that's the story. It's very personal to me because one of my longest and best friends did the work (he's really a master of color shading and black line) so it's both a radical tattoo and a tribute to my friendship with Spike that will last a lifetime.
getting tattoos really doesn't hurt, it feels like you scraped your knee more than anything. of course though if you get it where there's not alot of meat such as your wrist or ankle, it hurts like bleep. i have one on the inside of each wrist, those hurt like an expletive deleted, on the arm you barely feel it. i've also heard the upper back/lower neck hurts alot.
Thats pretty cool! I am 47 years old, I have been considering a tat for at least 30 of those years. I still dont have one! I had a buddy that was a tattoo artist, he once told me to pick a design, tape it to the fridge, or bathroom mirror and look at it every day for a year. If I still wanted it on my body forever, get it tattooed then. I haven't had a picture that I liked for more than a month or two! SO the search is still on!
Got 3 tats the very first time they turned us loose at Camp Lejeune NC lol. The funny thing was they told us not to get any ink that weekend because we were going to be heading out into the woods for about 2 weeks. When we came back on Sunday, they lined us all up and said strip lol. BUSTED!! Just about every knucklehead there had ink all over them.
