Kathie, your observations are why I've avoided cartos for 2 years. I've tried them (and tried them) and the burning issues have kept me from giving them serious consideration... until recently.
The new technology RedAlert mentions without polyfill is promising, but everything I've read so far from those who are giving them some heavy use tells me they have a long way to go still. It seems they don't work without some tips and tricks being applied so wouldn't recommend them to a new user yet. I think there are still a few bugs to be worked out (condensation in the tubes, burning of liquids, cracking of outer clear cases, leaking tops). The new G4 looks quite promising, however after reading several reviews this morning, I'm not running to buy any yet and will wait for the next generation of them.
If you are past caring about the size of the model you use (if it doesn't have to feel like the size of a cigarette), there are a few models you might want to consider. Picture comparisons of two of the models I'm writing about below can be found in this post:

Many find the eGo Tank atomizers to be the closest thing to a long lasting vape without fillers and the benefits of a cartomizer (a tank filled with liquid is inserted into the atomizer tube and feeds on to a atomizer). No "fluffy burnable stuff" in this unit at all. The unit is larger (plus a 650 mAH battery which will give you more run time) and there are comparison pictures to standard e-cigs on the forum. While not perfect (heavy VG liqud doesn't wick well in these), it seems to work well for many people and is easy for new users.
Perhaps you might want to investigate those and see if it is something you'd be interested in. A good thread to hunt through is here:
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ego-type-models/139915-new-ego-tank-system.html A friend loaned me one so I've tried one of these for a few weeks and found it to be really pretty good (but I stuck to my trusty penstyle atomizers... the 302 and returned it to her without purchasing one since I was considering something else which I'll write about below).
There are several versions of the Tank out, so make sure you ask or are certain about what you are buying from your vendor. I got this info. about the various versions off the forum:
eGo-t type A version 1 = around 2.3 ohms narrow needle tank holds 1.1ml - cone shaped atty
eGo-t type A version 2 = around 2.3 ohms fatter needle same tank 1.1ml - cone shaped atty
eGo-t type A LR - around 1.7 ohms (low resistance) fat needle same tank 1.1ml - cone shaped atty
eGo-t Type B - tank holds over 2ml, standard resistance around 2.3 ohms - cylinder shaped atty
The only cartomizer I've bought recently is the 3ml GoGo carto system. This is the first cartomizer system that I found to be a safer technology, acceptable liquid volume (3ml!) and a great long lasting 1300 mAH battery. The horizontal atomizer coil sits below the filler so is to be much less of a chance to burn and after much research, I didn't find that they really burn unless you vape them totally dry (and there are several people in my local Social Group that I see each month who aren't having any issues and I've only seen one with a tiny scorch mark on the bottom, not really burning). I love the amount of liquid this holds (good for at least a half day of heavy vaping and easy to drip into to top off once a day) however, I'm having a little difficulty getting them filled up correctly to wick the liquid. I find that getting the carto filled properly is a trick (hate using a syringe) but I think I finally figured that I had too much VG in my liquid and when I added more PG based liquid to the GoGo carto it did finally get it going and it's working quite well with clouds of vapor and I love that I only need to drip into the carto once a day to top it off. I'll need to give it more of a "GoGo"" (LOL) but I think this is a pretty great system and when filled right with the right consisency of liquid, is pretty perfect at this juncture (but then, I haven't used it very long). You're welcome to PM me for more info. as I progress or I can put you in touch with some of the long(er) time users. Since you have used cartos for a bit, you might find you take to the GoGo quickly and you'll likely understand the filling aspect of this type of carto so it could be more to your liking.
The down side is that this unit is proprietary in threading, so only one adapter is available for fitting a kr808 cartomizer to the GoGo battery. I'm sure someone will make compatible "similar model atomizers" for this at some juncture (China always does).
You can find more information on the GoGo here in this thread
