Brass king V2 knurled clone.
About 20$
Solid brass, copper contacts, recessed button, reverse threaded locking ring, fully adjustable for battery rattle. Accepts all 18xxx size batteries.
Built like a hammer, hits like Conor McGreggor.

The Stingray X clone, ideally the Kepler version which has a one piece tube rather than three giving it supeor performance.
Copper on the inside SS on the outside, so great conductivity without the stink fingers. Magnetic switch, floating silver plated positive 510 pin, georgeous as hell. Small and neat and has a very low voltage drop. Can be aquired for around $25.

I know the King is a great mech, but (imo) brass smells even worse than copper.

Take the time to read ECF member Baditudes blog specifically this article

You can't really go wrong with a 1:1 stingray as your first mech. As long as the switch doesn't fire through the magnets and you understand which atomizers you can't use with the pinless 510 topcap it is a trouble free mech that can handle whatever your batteries can.
I've often wondered:
How do you clean that copper?

Doesn't the X have that god-awful rice pin?

Yeah that's the negative... I know you know this Ninja and are being rhetorical ;)

The positive is that I believe it has a VD as low as a copper smpl with one-piece contact(v1; c-clip) and that's the standard non-kepler... Not really important unless using pretty low builds though and wanting max efficiency...

I've hunted for a kepler stingray-x for some time, but they are discontinued on FT/FC, unless the ceracoated version, which some state possibly is slightly worse...

Hmm, that reminds me... I need to test the king v2 with another than standard spring, although it looks very fine and not flimsy at all...

I clean mine with ketchup and a toothbrush, comes up nice'n shiney.

I never use the 'hybrid' style adapter, there's no point. It saves about 2mm in length (meh), deceases the voltage drop by a truly neglibable amount (MEH!), and introduces known potential safety issues (erp). The best feature of the SX is the self-adjusting floating 510 pin. I cannot understand why so few mechs have them.

Standard, the rice pin gives a little rotationally, I replaced mine with a maginally bigger pin and now it's solid. Stronger magnets or a good spring make a big difference too.
I struggle to find justification to use any of my other half dozen mechs. The only mech I'm vaguely interested in aquiring is the Sigelei Fu Chai as it has the same copper/SS arrangement. But it has the standard three part 510/battery rattle adjuster arrangement which I detest, which along with it's price and rarety has put me off so far.

A pinless-510 topcap gives neglible decrease in VD agreed, but that's not a constant though, as the lower you go, the "bigger" the "neglible" efficiency gets proportionally raised... Of course into safe limits ;)

E.g. I saw some calculations, where the same mod in copper and SS bodies had the most slightest difference when calculated correctly with example values, but then those neglible values didn't was completely neglible anymore with the lower builds... Anyway, just pinless-510 topcap vs. copper(silver-plated) floating one-piece 510-pin, shouldn't really make any diff... Lol, just like you stated, sorry, but I just meant in the bigger picture here and in general :) (Of course if the rest of the design isn't also "optimated" for max-effeciency, then a pinless-510 mech could easily be worse than another "full-510"...)

Anyway, I personaly love pinless-510's for the extra simplicity, less-cleaning, shorter and slightly more effecient on low builds if good mod, or if using a pinless-510 topcap option instead...

Also agreed that new mech users shouldn't mess with pinless-510's unless properly educated first, but although that goes with any mech also imho...

Just looking for a little help in getting my first mech mod.

No recommendations for a specific model, but I do provide some tips for someone new to mechanical mods in my blog below.

A Beginner's Guide to Your First Mechanical Mod
  • Covers the differences between a mechanical vs. regulated mod, essential safety accessories, optional safety accessories to add layers of safety to your mech, routine maintanance, use of proper batteries, proper ventilation, low resistance vaping, and faux hybrid mods.
Personally, I use a Silver Bullet mech from AltSmoke.

Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA Setup
  • A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod safely & inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and links to where to find them.

I too was interested in picking up my first mechanical and was looking into a Nemesis clone. Are there much better options out there or is this an OK start? They seem pretty reliable and very praised, but a bit dated nonetheless.
You answered your own question.
The nemesis is a great mod but its a dated design.
Yes, it's a good starter mech.

I have five Nemeses. The bright copper one was real cheap, and a mistake. I use them with kicks, and have three fuses in my emergency box. I also have the p 2.5, which is good for trouble-shooting, as well as vaping. I don't recommend going pure mech for that reason. Nice to know your equipment inside out, and when you have them all similar, that helps. My top watts is around twelve, with 1.7Ω coils at 30g. Happy with this, and see no reason for getting anything else.

They all have names. Left to right; Binky, Nanny, Num-Num, Nephi, Ninny, and Blanky. I vape for comfort, rather than adventure.

The Nemesis has lots of parts, extremely fine threads on the lock ring, and an over complicated switch assembly with two springs and a rice pin that makes it all work.
The tiny rice on is soft brass, as well as the housing it rides in. Both wear and when they become loose the switch is awful.

The Nemesis is still a great mod, but there are much much better options available today.
I own 4 Nemesis mods. I'm very familiar with the design.
