Ok so my uncle thinks all my vaping stuff is crazy, every time he comes over he has to make some crack about my stuff ( yes he smokes) I showed him my lil vv box mod ( looks like the lil white one from mad vapes for about $35) I told him I thought I could probably build my own vv box mod if he wuld help me do it. He laughed and said "no way can U build one of those!" he thinks I cant do it because I am a woman and not mechanically inclined. I think thats kinda rude, and well basically I took it as a challenge :p he was like I am not helping u cause u cant do it! So I said I would bet him I could make one by myself before Christmas. ( maybe I will wrap it and give it to him as a christmas present ) that ought to shut him up right!? I would love to make him eat his words! So..... Is there a modder out there who would help me? Any women who are as offended as I was? O btw, there was no money involved in this bet, just pure bragging rights!

Just for simplicity, I would start with one of these:25W Adjustable Switching Regulator - RobotShop

They are not the cheapest, but are a really nice regulator and already have all of the vv components: regulator, caps, resistors, trimmer, all nicely prepackage and wired up. Just 3 connections. This would fit in a 4AA battery box with room to spare for the switch, 2 14500 batteries, and atty connector.

You are going to have to be able to solder for any vv mod you make.

You can get all the parts you need from Madvapes. I believe the vv board kit comes with a schematic. All the parts you need are the VV board kit, a switch, a 3 aa box, and a connector. The tools you'll need are a drill with an 11/32 bit for the connector hole, and one that's sized for the switch, and a soldering iron with a small tip. Supplies that'll be required are RTV or epoxy, and maybe a bit of 24 guage wire if there's not enough that comes with the box.

If you're set on doing it I'd suggest you buy enough parts to build 2 units. It's just as easy building 2 at the same time as 1, and you'll have spare parts if you mess up one in the process. I'd call Madvapes and tell them what you want to do, they'll probably just list everything you need so you don't have to worry about it.

I have a drill and a soldering iron, bought a mulitmeter tonight, getting geared up!! Thanks everyone! Keep the info coming! I think I can I think I can I think I can :)

you most definitely can. soldering is real simple.

How and WHY to Solder Correctly - YouTube

I second jmanning's recommendation. Minimal soldering and assembly required. It can be done for less money, but it's increasingly complicated. With the regulator Jmanning recommended, you just need to solder the regulator to the batteries, switch(es) and atomizer connector. No through-hole soldering required, you just need to solder wires and leads.

I'm an electronics technician by trade, in school for electrical engineering. Feel free to ask if you need any help.

Also there are some excellent soldering instructional videos on youtube, if soldering is new to you they can be a great help. It is really not that hard, also like cskent said buy two of everything you need just in case you mess anything up you will have a backup part and won't have to wait for replacement parts to come in. Good luck, it is really cool to vape something you made yourself:)

Ok I don't wanna be a pita but if I can't get all the parts from mad vapes can someone give me a list of what I do need? And if I don't have a kit, won't I need a button? What am I using to make it fire? I have seen some parts that have wires attached and some that do not, I assume getting one that has wires on it would be a smarter move on my part? I am going into my local radio shop today. I have a vv otter box I am going to take with me, I am going to take it in there open it and say "tell me what these are, and do u have them?" bet those boys will get a good laugh, I will report back how it goes.... Wish me luck! :)

Your uncle must not be very familiar with that thing they call the internet. A person could work on a Lamborghini by watching youtubes if he/she wanted to.

I think it is insulting of your uncle to say what he said and not be encouraging, but the way he went about it may just be his way of getting you to take action and accomplish something. Either way you can do it and everything you need is right here in the modder's section.

Ok, maybe if I start by saying what I would like to build would help. Shan B at vapecore has a vv box mod with a voltage display on the outside of the box. It also has a catch cup. Would like for it to run on 2 x 3.7v 14500 batteries just because that's what I already have. I have looked at shans site ALOT but my money flow and her availability have never matched up. I would also like to have a sturdy on off switch, I would love an led also, but at this point I don't think it wise for me to push my luck. When I took my box mod into radio shack yesterday I think they may have thought I was building a bomb, lol. When I went in there and opened it and showed the guy, I am pretty sure he jumped:p. There were a few things they did not know and of course I couldn't tell them. I also have a guy at the hardware store trying to help me if I can get him a list of what I need. I have been looking on the mod threads and again, lots of info, but very confusing. I am not giving up though, gee I wonder if Shan would sell me a kit, then tell me how to build her mod :vapor:

Here's a tutorial from MadVapes (with pictures) on how to make 5V box mod. This is good for how to do individual steps (not for the VV itself)
How to Build a 5 Volt 510 Box Mod

You can get this module from ebay which should fit into a 4 AA battery box:
LM2596 DC-DC Converter Power Supply Buck Step Down Module In:4-40V Out:1.5-35V | eBay
The only thing is that these can take ~20 days to get to your door.

510 Atty Connector from MadVapes:
Silver 510 Battery Connector, Sealed

Here's a switch from MadVapes:
Horn style switch -- Black

Here's a switch from Radio Shack:
3A 125V SPST Normally Open Pushbutton Momentary Switch - RadioShack.com

Here's a 4AA battery box from Radio Shack:
Enclosed 4 AA Battery Holder : Battery Holders | RadioShack.com

If you go this route, here is a quick diagram for wiring it up:

well you could go with the bigger bats but then that will be harder on your part...if you go to donptals poor-vari mod post in the bat mod sections its simple and he has a decent diagram to fallow, however he hasnt included a voltage read out...but then your looking at a handful of parts, oh at rat shack they should have a black 4AA box and those work pretty good, they will not have the regulators you need and i have yet to see a pot that i would want to use...there all pretty big,..good luck and hope ya win!-))

oh was just on madvapes and they do have the VV kits back in not a bunch so you might want to hurry!-))

I should start by saying that I have zero experience building any type of mod so I would not be able to answer any questions but i do remember watching this vid a while back and thought it might be helpful to you. Kanal von steeljan - YouTube
Good luck!

P.S. There is also this other vid by SteelJan using an elmo toy that is supposedly the easiest VV mod to make.
