[skip to the end if TL;DR]

First, let me start by saying I think vaping is great. I got my dad, a serious smoker of decades, to try an ecig rig... and it worked! He actually completely got off of the cigarettes for a while (6-7 months), and all was well.

However, my dad is over 60 and not technically savvy. Every setup I bought him, he either dropped, lost, got caked with ecig liquid, burnt out the coils by using the incorrect power setting, etc. etc. I found I had to do a majority of the "maintenance", i.e. cleaning the ecig, changing coils, making sure to use the right setting. Some setups I bought him were too complicated (i.e. push the vape button 3 times to turn off). And many components themselves were not high quality and/or prone to leaking or malfunctioning.

Soon I found myself burning a hole in my pocket replacing the ecig so many times, and he got tired of the complicated nature of the thing, now he's back on regular cigarettes!

What I'm looking for: a moderately priced, very easy to use (think iPhone of ecigs), reliable (won't break if dropped), not complicated (sub-ohm..510..3000... huh? why do I need to have taken a college circuits class to vape? I just want to be able to press one button and have a reasonable pull, without having to do research and think), vape with a decent "pull"... you get the picture.

It seems there is so much customization available, and not a single quality product that is miles ahead of everything else... a relatively new industry. The variety gets your head spinning.

Anyone have any products / starter kits in mind? I'm looking for THE bar none best setup that meets these criteria - hopefully not too unrealistic?

Thanks all for your help!

Over 60! Jeez, sorry to hear that. The fool proof products are disposable cigalikes. Give him a handful of those and see what happens. He might be clever enough to get the other stuff working. But may be he wishes you were spending more quality time together and this is how he gets it done? I had a Dad, it was complicated.

IMO you have ruled out anything other than a disposable. There is a sub-forum for disposables here. It sees little traffic these days, but I believe you would get information about other people's experience with them. Might be just what your dad needs.

Best of luck with it :thumb:

Hmm, I wonder why that is the case.

You would think that there would be a quality product that is easy to fill, charge, and maintain that is made for the average (or even less savvy than average) person, not the enthusiast / hobbyist. There's a reason Macs/iPods/iPhones have become so popular - windows/PCs tended to make things overly complicated.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. More insight always appreciated !

You said this AmericanRunner:

Some setups I bought him were too complicated (i.e. push the vape button 3 times to turn off). And many components themselves were not high quality and/or prone to leaking or malfunctioning.

Anything that can be refilled can be incorrectly filled and leak. Anything that is adjustable can be incorrectly adjusted. He can not handle pushing a button 3 times to turn it off. He drops and loses them.

The quality and dependability issues can be overcome with good mods. However that means dropping and losing things gets expensive.

A disposable is the easiest way to vape. If your dad can stay off cigarettes with one he might be quite happy with that system.

The only thing out today that doesn't take at least a little bit of maintenance is a disposable. Coils will have to be replaced or rebuilt eventually and a minimum amount of cleaning will be necessary. That is just the nature of vaping.

For me I would much rather do the maintenance on my device rather than cleaning up all the mess smoking makes. If someone really wants to make the switch then I would think that person would be willing to learn what needs to be done to keep up with their vaping equipment. This leads me to believe that vaping isn't your Dads idea. Of course, I could be totally wrong in that thought.

BTW: I am your Dads age or maybe a bit older and fortunately it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that vaping works but it does take a bit more work than lighting up a smoke.

You said he couldn't handle clicking a button 3 times to turn it on, can't adjust the power to his liking and can't take care of his stuff. I met a 93 year old woman today that recently picked up vaping to quit cigs and she can handle that. How many times has he started fires just dropping cigs and forgetting about them? Or, maybe he just doesn't want to vape? Almost all the gear out there is easy to use, but it isn't indestructible and it can't read the mind of the user.

I would go with a Tesla Two mod. It has 4000mah battery and one button super simple to use. I would put aspire nautilus with a 1.6ohm BVC coil. Doesnt get much simpler than that....:)

Thanks for the suggestion! Ignore the bits about him not being able to clean the setup and change coils (I thought that would be useful background info to prove the point that he is very low-tech) - more suggestions like this would be awesome.

1 button, reliable, easy to maintain.

I have tried Tesla Two at my local vape shop. I think its right up his alley. The hardest thing will be filling the tank. You can look up mod reviews on youtube.

Doesn't seem very interested. Vaping is not simple and easy like cigs. BT wanted it that way. He has to show a bit of respect and interest.

I switched overnight. He has to want it, and it is not as simple as cigs.

All those quoted posts hit exactly what I was thinking -- if he is not interested in very basic maintenance, can't even handle 3 clicks to turn on or off... He very likely just doesn't really want to vape, and is excusing his preference for cigarettes with the ridiculous fiction that "vaping is too hard." It's really not hard, but it does take a bit of motivation. If he is not motivated for the very simple maintenance that vaping requires.... then either you will have to do it for him, or he is going to smoke. Just that simple. He might even smoke even if you do take care of the maintenance for him -- you can't force someone to do anything, if they're not interested in doing it.
