HUH ??? there are V regs out there that are 4-5 pin and have a control pin on them that requires very little current/voltage to turn ON/OFF the output.

madvapes has one , is this what you want to do ?? it is the best way to control the output , no need for a high current switch this way.

No..I want an adjustable that you can use a different amount of resistors to alter the output voltage. I have used one from TI...the PTR08060W, and it works great... but I would like something smaller if possible.

Thanks Willy...very interesting. What I want to do is end up with around 4 volt output triggered by a simple touch switch we talked about in the other thread. The way I understand it is the TS needs to have 5v to operate..right? Problem is I dont like HV so I have to make something work with 3.7 at least.
I'm a bit confused. Are you starting with one 3.7 battery boosted to 4V, or two stacked batteries regulated down to 4V?

I would like to use 1 18650 thru a touch switch. But a TS needs 5v right? I could live with just the voltage of the 18650 if the TS would work like that, but if I need to go to 5v I would reduce the output after the switch to 4v. If I had to I could stack two 14500's.

I guess it would be crazy to boost to 5v for the switch then reduce it back for the output.

Nope. It should work fine. The mosfets for our use must be able to handle the amps and have a low 'Gate Threshold Voltage'. Typically 1 -2V.

The IRF8736PBF from that original post or a larger and easier to solder IRLU3114ZPBF (Nuck's choice).

Just remember to have a few of the extra resistors to play with if you run into sensitivity problems.

As Caesar noted.
Just want to add that this mosfet is a good one and can be used without issues. Also cheap and with great specs. Will serve you well for a long time.

I suggest making the 4.7Mohm resistor into a 50Mohm one. It will improve on sensitivity allowing dry hands to operate it.

As it is a purely resistive touch switch, it will work great as proposed with moist hands but if you have dry skin then increasing that resistor to 50Mohm or even 100Mohm will improve on reliability.

Great..if I can run the switch at 3.7v then no problem...the schematics I kept finding always had 5v at the input. I have some 16ga. Nichrome wire so I am planning to cut like 1/2" lengths have two embedded in urethane epoxy in a little thimble size pot and polish it down concave so the tips are flush and the switch recessed on the mod. If they work after testing for some time maybe I will make them for the modders that want them here..I'll see. I wont do it unless they look, feel and work just right though. Whaddya mean I cant use 120vac to the touch points??

Hey...speaking of resistors also...do you know if Digi-Key has like an assortment packs of them? I know there is so many different values but maybe they have them with common values that I'm not seeing. I know they are cheap but I would end up with a 1000 of them for a few mods. Also I want to get some caps to have around too. I was thinking some 10uf/16v and 100uf/16v, but what other sizes are handy with the stuff we build? A novice like myself should go with aluminum type right, not tantalum or thin film?

5card...I saw that VR on another post that they were talking about them...that needs min. 4.9 volts I think...I am trying to avoid that as I don't care for 5v mods. I made that Motorola PT thing where I dialed it in with resistors on the PTR08060W at 4.5v and I don't even use that. I need to add another resistor to bring it down to my sweetspot at 4v like a fresh batt.

Thanks again for your help guys!

Hmm... nichrome has an extremely high resistance. I wonder how that will affect things. Maybe for the better? You may want to also try more traditional metals for your contacts.

Usually yes...bit the 16ga is like .25ohms per foot and at 1/2" it doesnt register anything so it should be ok..just wanted something durable that wont oxidize.

I found a pack of resistors too but will still have to get the high ohm that are not in the pack...oh well...maybe do some e-art sculpture with the extras.:toast:

Digikey has prototype packs of res and caps I think , just do a search for them .
Or get a potentiometer to find the right value then replace it with a fixed resistor of that value .

Found them Buzz...thanks! Man those 100M resistors are over $2 a pop...and the packs only go up to 1M. I really need to get away from that site fast!! Like kid in a candy shop...but in my case the kid doesnt know what candy he wants but he knows he wants candy damnit!
