I've not had the same troubles. my wife also smokes and I got her onto VK too the very first day. Other friends who smoke, also onto VK. At work I've been told a few times that
vaping is bad, after me giving a basic rundown, so I ask them if I should go back to regular smokes instead. So far that's shut them all up

Now, as an alternative to quitting cold turkey, sure, I won't claim
vaping is healthier long term (although I've read in many places that small amounts of nicotine, while it is classified as a poison, is not detrimental on it's own to your health), but as an alternative to smoking tobacco, I can't see how anyone would think it as anything but a step up.
I do think, however, that, perhaps on a subconscious level, many people look at vaping (particularly ex-smokers) as bad simply because it's so good - ie. they feel the urge to try, and that conflicts with their dislike for people addicted to nicotine. they know they won't smoke, because they don't already, but feel that vaping is a threat as it isn't 'bad for you' like smoking is... hmm. not sure that's making sense, so if it doesn't, just ignore it
