On a stock protank you will want to keep the wattage down a bit on the kick. My wife likes those coils around 6-8 watts. Adding a airflow control valve will allow you to use more power due to the increased airflow. As far as leaking I have seen it happen for three reasons. Using incorrect coils, drawing to hard causing excess liquid to flow in the coil area, improperly filling. I tend to flood my wifes kanger gear as im use to my wide open airflow rda which I typically do lung pulls. With her gear I have to draw into my mouth first then into my lungs or I pull too hard.

The 510 connector of the AFC is sealed. This prevents the atomizer head 'ooze' from ending up on top of your mod. The 'ooze' will collect in the AFC and can easily be rinsed away during atty head replacement.
Adjusting the AFC can also give you control over flooding and dry hits. Increasing the airflow helps with flooding issues, while decreasing airflow will help with dry hit issues.
I think my wife and I have 15-20 PT/PT2/Puritanks that all have AFCs installed. Needless to say, I love 'em.
