Hello all!

I've recently switched to flat ribbon wire and use it on a wire rope with a small #500 SS mesh sleeve. My first attempt seemed to go well. My second one pops and crackles like a bag of pop corn when I fire it up.

I'm using 0.8x0.1mm ribbon wire with a 4/3 wrap which comes in at ~0.74 - 0.80 ohms. I really don't know why it crackles like that and it makes the juice fly everywhere. It all glows evenly and I don't seem to notice any hot spots. Is the excessive crackling noise a symptom of the wire being wrapped too loose or too tight?

I've switched back to 28G Kenthal for the moment. Advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

eJohn, that crackling, juice flying behavior is normal with a good setup. What must not happen when the coil is wet is any part of it turning red. That results from the wick not supplying juice to the coil as fast as it's vaporizing it, possibly from a partial short of the coil to the wick, or just from the wick not keeping up. The vape from that will taste burnt. Anytime that happens to me I fix it immediately because I believe it to be a health risk.

I'm actually surprised your round Kanthal at the same resistance doesn't do this. Hope this helps :thumb:

I don't use ribbon much, but I'll take a WAG - and that WAG is, juice has a tendency to "cling" to flat wire more so than round. And so you get, initially... a bit more snap, crackle, pop effect than with round. Hows that for a theory bunky? ;-)

Yeah, I know... SOF, you is weird.

I see. Thanks for the replies!

No, the flat ribbon wire doesn't glow when I have juice in the tank. Wicking isn't really a problem. If anything... I find it wicks too quickly with a SS wire rope and ribon wire setup. I have to keep the mod nearly completely upright (vertical) or I get gurgling sounds and juice stuck in the air hole. I'm using it on a Kraken atty and go through a 2.5 ml tank at least twice a day. A 3 ml tank used to last me all day on my old genesis atty with regular SS mesh and 28G Kenthal.

I'll try flat ribbon again tomorrow and give it another go.
