Need some feedback before I get started - Puck with battery and passthrough capability.

So I want to build a puck that will use either a 2x AA or a 3x AA box. My idea is to create a USB Passthrough AA battery and mod the puck to allow the cord to enter so I can plug it in, or be able to put in a battery and hit the road.

This is what I'm looking to build:

This is my idea of what I would use to create a passthrough battery:

Do you notice any difference in battery life when using the voltage meter? I was going to do the same, but was concerned if I did it only using a 14500 3.7v that it might shorten the battery life some.
The voltage meter is on an on/off/on slide switch so it reads either in or out voltage. The center is off and I only turn it on to set my voltage, have never left it on to ck if it reduced battery life.

Ok, that's what I was going to do, but I was going to use a button that I could press to light it up and check and see what the output it. But I like your idea with the switch to check input and output.

Mind if I ask where you purchased the readout and regulator?

This regulator is the new type that has the holes for the on/off switch and you can use a low amp switch..
New LM2596HV LM2596S DC DC Step Down CC CV Adjustable Power Supply Module | eBay
This one has all included.
DC to DC Buck Step Down Converter Module LM2596 Voltage Regulator Voltmeter Red | eBay

For the LM2596 you will need two batts in series 7.2 volts, these are stepdown and need at least 2 volts more than the voltage you use. With one battery you will only get 1.7v out.
