A good friend of mine needs to quit smoking, so I'm gonna try to push vaping onto him. He's vaped V2 cigalikes before, and said they were passable in a pinch (airport, etc), but still preferred the analogs. So I want to get him an affordable setup that's relatively simple to use.

Here's the kicker though. He does not have a sense of smell or taste. I can make him a big batch of flavorless juice, but the problem is that most delivery systems I know of rely on the user to taste when it is going dry to replace parts or refill.

So what are my choices?

1. Genesis and RBAs are out -- not noob friendly, and I don't think he'd like fiddling. He didn't even want to roll his analogs.
2. Clearos are a possibility, since you can see how much juice is left and when to refill
3. Cartos would be difficult -- I'm not sure how he'd be able to tell that they need refilling
4. Might give him my VMod -- he should be able to judge it by the slight gurgle in the carto
5. Carto tanks?

Generally with anything carto related, how can one with no sense of taste tell that a carto is going bad?

Thank you for any suggestions!

I agree clearos are the way to go, especially for a new user. Since flavor isn't a forefront issue I'd say a CE4 is a decent choice: mine is almost 3 weeks old and still going strong with no leaks. Easy to fill and easy to tell when to fill.

Down the road a carto-tank setup would be a stronger option, but I don't know that a newbie who's only halfway interested would want to go to the trouble of that learning curve.

Even without taste I assume he can feel heat and throat hit, right? I would assume those two are even more important for him actually. In that case you might go with a spinner or twist so he can up the volts a bit to get it warmer. I would consider getting a menthol juice instead of unflavored: even if he can't taste the flavor it'll add to the physical sensation. And probably go 50/50 on the blend: having some VG in there will give "body" to his vape so he can feel it and see the plumes. All important, and probably moreso for a gent that can't taste or smell.

Good luck!!

Excellent question... my BF's mom had an accident several years ago and cannot smell or taste anything either. She uses a cig-a-like auto battery with pre-filled cartridges. It's never occurred to me to ask how she knows when to change the cartridge, I would guess that she does it when the vapor production drops off. I'll ask her about this.

Also, I believe she can detect very spicy things although its more of a sensation than the actual flavor. I would think this sensation also allows her to feel throat hit when vaping. Again, I'll ask.

As for the delivery device question, I agree with a clear cartomizer with a top coil. Easy to see when it's running low, and the top coil will add some warmth.

I had scarlet fever when I was 3 and it destroyed my sense of smell. I can still taste though it might not be like everyone else tastes cause its all I have ever known. Im 39 now and this is the first time I really wished I could smell. My hubby tells me how good it smells when I vape and I can't smell it. But I can taste the juice but like I said it might not be how everyone else tastes it.

Personally I would recommend clearo or carto/tank. When I use a carto/tank I generally replace my carto's weekly. However, it has been reported that a carto can last anywhere between 4 days and 4 weeks depending on the user. I find weekly replacement is good enough for me. And as carto's are pretty cheap replacing them weekly is no issue.

I quit using V2 with cartos at 18mg. It was a little tough. The liquimax clearos were a huge step up in satisfaction for me, but they tend to be rather poor quality when comparing to a Kanger or Visions that ive used on my ego. They do have a nice new Kanger 808 clearo that im sure would work like a champ on a V2. I also think the clearos are great for a new vaper because they are so user friendly. My friend just ordered a 5 pack here.
