Don't use any protected ICR battery. Don't be tempted by the higher mAh of these batteries, you need a high-drain IMR battery.

The following high-drain IMR batteries will have the higher mAh that you need for longer battery life:

LG
LG18650HE2 2500mah

Panasonic or Orbtronic
NCR18650BD 3200mAh
NCR18650PF 2900mAh
NCR18650PD 2900mAh
Orbtronic 18650 2500mAh

Samsung
INR18650-25R 2500mAh

Sony
18650VTC5 2600mAh

Does it mean any 18650 battery will work with my mod, what do I look out for. My mod only does 4-12 volts...

When shopping for an 18650 battery for your regulated VV mod, go through the following priorities:

  • Safe chemistry - all IMR (Li-Mn) and IMR/hybrid batteries are safe chemistry and "unprotected"; Li-ion ICR or protected batteries are not safe chemistry.

  • High drain - all IMR and most IMR/hybrid batteries are high drain; Li-ion ICR or protected batteries are not. High drain and high capacity (high mAh rating) does not mean the same thing. See amp limit below*.

  • Amp limit - usually listed in the specifications as "maximum continuous discharge rate". At least 10 amps for an 18650 battery. *Your processor uses pulse width modulation to create higher voltage from a 3.7 volt battery, which may require up to 9 amps output from the battery. (ICR batteries typically have only 2 - 4 amps.)

  • Brand name - not all batteries are created equal. Brand name batteries are higher quality. Generic no-name batteries, or batteries with "fire" in the name, are poor quality batteries which have no place being used in a mod.

Edit to add:

Protected li-ion ICR batteries may not even work in some regulated mods.

Panasonic or Orbtronic NCR18650A 3100mah and NCR18650B 3400 mah batteries are not high drain. Purple Efest 3100mah 20 amp batteries are not high drain.
