I would like to request a feature. Would be great to see in the inventory how many recipes uses a flavor. I can see the number when I go to delete a flavor or search for a recipe containing that flavor, but would like to see it in the inventory. If I have an ingredient that I use in a lot of recipes, I could adjust the alarm threshold to a higher number so I can order before I start a large mixing session.
This will be in the next version that I make available however; I am not able to display the count if you are using the grid (Edit->Ingredient Editor) to edit your ingredients.

Version 4.0.3.2 is available for download. Changes include:

1. Updated the merge/combine recipes window to allow the recipe names to increase in size when the window is increased in size.

2. Made a few other cosmetic changes to the merge/combine recipes window.

3. There was an issue with the column headings on the recipe window aligning when the scrollbar was added. Fixed.

4. On the Ingredient window I added the display of the number of recipes that the ingredient is being used in.

Perfect! Thank you. You have it in the right place for me to change the alarm threshold. This will help me so much. Another donation coming your way.

I downloaded the calculator, however when I run the setup program it tells me that .NET 4.0 full or higher needs to be installed before it will install and then only gives the option to quit. I'm pretty sure that I've already got .NET 4 installed but just in case I downloaded it from Microsoft and tried to install it and the .NET installer told me that I've already got 4.0 or higher installed and exited as there was nothing to install sine I already have it.

Any clues?

It does require the .NET Framework 4.0. Here is a link to the installer: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17851

Hello HotRod...
I'm a new convert to weighing rather than measuring by volume. I'm not a chemist and understanding some of the calculations involved give me heartburn.

I've been using the ejuice calculator up till now and it's seemed adequate for volume calculation but doesn't include a column for weights. So some brethren here recommend a look at your calculator.

I just took a bunch of recipes I created in eJuice and imported them and I'm trying to work backwards as to how your program recreates them and does the conversions and if the amounts make sense to me with my limited ability to decipher them.

I took one which I call Black Cherry 30mil 50/50 12 drops flavour... you can see it in Ejuice and then imported it into your recipe calculator because I wanted to see the resulting weights column looked like. My base nic is PG 100mg.

black cherry recipe calculator.jpg

My images seem fuzzy and I apologize this this, not sure what I'm doing wrong in this area... could use some help in regards to clarity of the images.

when I look at the weight results in the Recipe Calculator weight column they seem to simply mirror the values of the ML column. i.e.
nic value = 3.6g
PG = 10.8g
VG = 15.0g
cherry = .60 or 12 drops

This cause me to raise an eyebrow as I thought something would be different in the calculations. Because I'm not a chemsitry major I don't know how to ask the question i want properly again an apology for this.

It's my understanding that we need to allow for the specific gravity of liquids. Roughly VG is 1.26g/ml so I would like to think that the value in your ML column should differ from what's calculated in the Grams column. Is this not the case. i.e. there should be a larger value.

Would it not be 15ml multiplied by the SG of VG roughly being 1.26 for a value of 18.9?

any help/enlightenment from the brethren would be greatly appreciated

thank you

Welcome to the world of mixing by weight. You will find that mixing your recipes will go much faster and after mixing there is little to no clean up work that you have to do.

The other calculator doesn't allow you to specify weights of your various ingredients therefore when you import the recipe there is no weight values to import and it defaults. You can specify what the default value is in the "Tools->Options Ingredient defaults" tab.

After importing you will need to click on the "Ingredients" button and select each one of the ingredients and provide the "Grams per ml" value. After setting that value to the appropriate weight you will see that all of your recipe values will update to the appropriate amounts.

You have given me an idea of a change that I may make when importing. I may attempt to default the ingredients weights. I can set the default value of a VG ingredient to the known weight of VG, PG to the known weight of PG and default the other ingredients to either 1 gram per ml or calculate their weight based on the specified percentage of PG/VG that they contain. Although the default values will be approximations it might be better than defaulting them all to the value specified in the options.

I have two changes ready but before I make the new version available I would like some input from people more knowledgeable than me.
  1. When importing recipes from calculators where the weight is unknown I am calculating the weight of each ingredient based on the percentage of PG and VG in the ingredient.
  2. On the "Ingredient" window I added a button that can be clicked to automatically calculate the weight of the ingredient based on the PG and VG percentages.
What I am unsure of is the weight values to use for PG, VG and no PG/VG. Is the weight of 100% PG = 1.036g? Is the weight of 100% VG = 1.249g? Should I default the weight of anything with no PG and no VG to 1.0g?

Thank you kindly for the reply HotRod... mixing by weight in my opinion even though I haven't been DIY for very long seems the most logical way to make up ejuice and the bonus is as you said... not much cleanup. I might add less chance of toppling containers when using syringes to do the extractions as least for me. my lab techniques were never the smoothest.

I think I understand what you've said and tormorrow I'll try adjusting the entries you mentioned.

I read your subsequent post with interest and I hope some will jump in with their comments. I'm too new to say anything on those points.

Your numbers for PG and VG are correct. General consensus is that flavorings should be used with a density of 1. If users take the time to enter the PG/VG ratio of an ingredient, then calculate accordingly.

Mixing by weight is great. Clean, fast, and accurate. I have suppliers marked that ship flavors in glass, flat top, bottles, and only buy from them if I have to. I hate having to use syringes. I now have several empty drip top flavor bottles that I need to wash so I can dump some glass flat tops in them :)

Rod,

I just thought of something else....Since I usually have 3-5 instances running at once, could you please add a call to allow it to minimize?
Thanks :)
If you are seeing the "?" for help in the upper right corner of the window click "Tools->Show minimize/maximize buttons".

If you are running 3-5 instances of the calculator and working with the same juice file, be careful. If you make changes and save in one instance and then click the save button in another instance, you will loose the changes that you saved in the first instance.

Version 4.0.3.3 is available with two changes:
1. When importing recipes from other calculators that do not have weight values, the weight of the ingredients will be calculated based on their PG/VG percentage.
2. Added a button on the ingredient window to calculate the weight of the ingredient based on the ingredients PG/VG percentage.

Hello HotRod...
I've downloaded/installed your latest version the 4.0.3.3. Thank you for the update and for your time to constantly work on improving your program.

I noticed what may be a cosmetic issue on the "about" tab. The popup panel's length dimensions seem a little short on my display so the OK button isn't completely revealed.

ok button.jpg

I'm still pretty new at this and as mentioned I used the eJuice calculator previously. Shortly afterwards and on recommendations from other DIY users I saw and downloaded your program. My initial reaction was... this is way more than what I need, for what I do. I don't have a chemistry background and sometimes I get a little confused with the mathematics and equations involved. But I'm having second thoughts because your program seems to have the capacity to handle a lot more things as one's knowledge increases. So I should quite with my negatively and put the due diligence in to learn it properly.

I have a question on installing the updates...
can we just install the updates over the existing program or version that already running in our system? That's sort of what I did for 4.0.3.3. I have software that requires one to first remove the original and then install the new stuff.

I think I'll spend some time reading through the individual sections in your help file. I'm still quite new with using it.

Hello HotRod
I just remembered something I notice when looking at the File Maintenance module. This was after the import from eJuice.

I noticed a whole bunch of Nicotine versions i.e. Nicotine, Nicotine(1), Nicotine(2), Nicotine(3) etc... right up to Nicotine(21).

I like to avoid all these different nicotine versions...

I don't know why I'm doing the important other than I want to capture several existing recipes that I have renamed and altered to my taste preference. I don't think I need the whole file in it's entirety other than a curiosity for the existing flavours in eJuice. Maybe I should just import the several I created individually?

I think I read where you do include a default list of recipe starter kit... is this a mirror of the recipes in eJuice relatively speaking or something completely new?

I guess the question is to avoid all the nic versions just add the personal ones I've changed for my own liking to your starter list?
thank you

this is interesting... the columns bold headings re-aligned themselves correctly after resizing the window and it may have also have happened because I rechecked the defaults under "hide values" in the tools/options/recipe defaults... i think it's initially togged on (meaning you don't see weights column) and you have to uncheck it if you want to see weights...
I'm not sure what happens when you do updates... I would assume the program checks your personal defaults first and leave them alone when version updates are done...
