I have done as Penguin has stated. Made a category called Flavor bases and another called made from flavor base. That way for any recipe that I use a base for I actually have 3 recipes. One for the original one for the base itself and one for the recipe made from base. Then add a flavor to the ingredients list EG: Lemon pie base. Definately sounds alot more complicated than it is.

I have been working on a feature which at this point I am not satisfied with it and I haven’t made it available yet (I have it hidden in V6.0.0.4). This conversation is directly related to what I have been attempting to implement so take a look at it and give me some feedback.

Before I tell you how to see the feature let me described the idea:
You have created a recipe that you like and you want to create a "flavor base" (a mixture of the flavor ingredients) that you can use in future recipes.
When the window is launched it will use the information in the recipe that you currently have displayed to populate some information. From this window you can:
1. Create a recipe so that you can mix the flavor ingredients that you will use as an ingredient in future recipes (flavor base recipe).
2. Create the ingredient entry that will be used in your future recipes (flavor base ingredient).

Again, I wasn't ready to make this available, I feel it still needs a lot of work. If you want to play with it and provide some feedback here is how you can launch it.
Display one of your recipes that has several flavor ingredients. Hold down the "Ctrl" key and click the "Edit" menu option. Select the option at the bottom of the menu labeled "Create flavor base from recipe".

Another suggestion. It seems when we hit save, the .xml is deleted and re-created with the new info. Would it be possible to either append, or empty the contents instead of deleteing?

I use linked files and dropbox to sync between 2 computers, but the link gets broken each time as the file is deleted not updated.

If the file isnt deleted, ill go hit my computer for being stupid lol!
Love the program btw, so so much better then the excel sheet ive been using for 8 years, lol.
I wasn't aware this was happening. I see the issue and it will be fixed in the next version.

I looked at the Base setup but haven't played with it yet, that does appear to be what I was asking about though. To the right of the ingredients displayed there are a set of numbers, what are these?
Sorry, figured it out, it's percent the ingredients are for the mix (the percentage symbol isn't displaying unless the "Include PG and VG.." selection was selected)... since I mix in weight, what I would need to do to construct say 60 ml of the base would be to figure what the weight would be for each of the percentages for the different ingredients. Personally for me a value for the amount to create would be nice so next to the displayed percentages would be the amount to use to construct the base. Then again the more options you keep adding by the time you finished up you'd be creating a whole new program. How many more cheat codes/easter eggs did you build into this? lol

The way I make a flavor base now: go to the recipe, change target nic to 0 and change amount to make to the amt of flavor base I want (i.e. 15ml). Click on the big Flavor % at the top left and change whatever percentage that is to be 100%. Click apply and now I have the amounts/weights to make 15ml of flavor base. Click to remove amts from inventory.

Then I add the base as a new ingredient, with the info provided on the recipe page (cost, qty, default percent to use, amt on hand.

I think the only thing you'd have to add to what is already done on the hidden screen, is add an option to select amount of flavor base you want to make, rather than have it just use the amount needed to make one bottle.

Is there a mobile version yet? .. Android to be exact. .
Right, one that uses a cloud based config file so you can always have your recipes with you so you can create and tweak them on the road.

One can dream, right?

Well I have been playing with this feature for a couple of days. It accomplishes in seconds what I have been doing manually. Works extremely well. I'm not sure what you mean by it needing alot of work. For me it fills the bill. Are there other options that you wanted to add that need work ?

Question since you are familiar with it, I don't know that the nicotine and PG/VG options add any value. I am considering removing both and just have it setup for the flavor only option. Your thoughts?

I am considering removing both and just have it setup for the flavor only option.
If this was an open ended question... I would use it just for a tool to create a personal flavor and not have the vg/pg/nic settings unless that is used as part of the flavor, in which case a person could add a pure vg or pg flavor under the standard ingredient list (as a flavor) to be used if needed.

Personally I was surprised to see them there. I kinda scratched my as to how I would use them to my advantage. I was unable to figure out what use I would have for them and don't think they are a needed feature. wouldn't bother me to see them removed. Anybody else feel free to enlighten as to how these can be used.

Version 6.0.0.5 is available for download. Changes include:

1. When being saved, the JuiceData file was always being recreated rather than being updated. Changed so that the file would be updated if it already exists.

2. Add a new option on the "Ingredient default" tab of the "Tools->Options" window. You can specify an increment value that will be used on the recipe window when changing the ingredients percentage when the up/down arrow for the percentage button is clicked.

3. Add the ability to create a "flavor base" recipe and to create an ingredient entry for the flavor base recipe. See the "Edit->Create flavor base from recipe" menu item.

I've been mixing my own juice for a couple years. I just recently came across this calculator and so far it is by far the best calculator I have used. I love being able to mix by weight, and I love that it has the inventory function. Rod, you have done an awesome job on this!! I just finished reading almost every post in this thread. Lots of useful information in this thread.
My only question is, is there a way to store the inventory, the recipes, and all my settings in my Google Drive? I read about the portable installation, and I became a little confused. The reason I ask is because I have a ton of flavors I'm working on adding into inventory and my wife and I will often mix at the same time. It would be nice for both of us to each have the program opened on our laptops and then for one of us to be able to update the inventory and have it be correct if the other one of us opens a recipe or checks the inventory right after that. Basically, I'm hoping there is a way for both of us to have the program open on separate laptops and be able to mix while keeping the inventory current. I apologize if that doesn't make any sense, I'm having a hard time explaining what I mean.

The new addition of the base flavor creation is very nice! Took me a second or 2 to figure out that a person only needed to use the "Save as new recipe" button for it to display the amounts needed to make the base flavor up. I kept trying to figure out what amount in grams would equal what percent of flavor "a", "b", and "c" that was needed to be incorporated to make flavor base "y". Thanks a lot for making this available.

There are two different installations, the standard install and the portable install. With both installations you can save your juice file on something such as Google Drive (which is what I do) by using the File->Save As. This allows multiple computers to have access to all of the recipes and ingredients.
There are a few other files used by the calculator. All of your settings (Tools->Settings), your shopping list and files used to store your label definitions if you use the print labels functionality. These files are stored differently for the standard and portable installations.
With the standard installation, Windows will store these files in the AppData folder. For Windows 7 this is "c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\JuiceCalculator".
With the portable installation you choose where to install the calculator. You could choose to install on a USB stick or something such as Google Drive. There is a subdirectory that is created called ".\Data". The subdirectory will hold your settings, shopping list and label files. You then launch the EJuiceCalculator.exe from the installation folder and it has access to the .\Data directory. This allows you to run the application from multiple computers and always have all of your settings available.

So... if you just want to share your recipes and ingredients you can use the standard installation and save your juice file on Google Drive. If you also want to share settings and shopping list, use the portable installation and install it choosing a folder on Google Drive. Create a shortcut on your desktop and point it to the EJuiceCalculator.exe on your Google Drive (done automatically by the installer).
