Since it came up - there is also 635 mesh that is supposed to work even better than 500 but is much more costly and might not really be worth the extra expense in smaller devices when the 500 would work fine. I have only had 400 to play with myself and wasnt really happy with it but found about the wire rope and its so much cheaper I figured I would try that first. And I am glad I did because I got enough to last me prolly forever for under 10 bucks and its working so good I prolly wont bother with the mesh...

Yes, the 635 costs a lot more, and BJ43 said it wasn't worth it for a Wick less than 2 inches long.

From the little looking I did, it seems that some of the Rope has Manufacturing Oils on it (as does some SS Mesh). Does Yours? If so, how do you clean it?

You might be able to wash it off by soaking it in Everclear. That's 95% Pure Alc, and should do a pretty good job. Some people are washing their Mesh with Soapy Water b4 wrapping it. I suggested to a friend to scrub it with an Acid Brush (a horse hair bristle brush), with the bristles cut to about 1/4 inch, while it's soaking in Everclear. Of course, it would be harder to scrub the Rope. How ever it is cleaned, they rinse it off really good with Distilled Water afterward.

I think that took care of it lol My first tank full was funky tasting but I used a layer of cotton crochet thread under the coil and I forgot to wash that so I chalk the funky taste up to something in the string.
