What do you think of the new purposed regulations about the government controlling the internet and if it will affect discussion groups like this one

Is this the first step to regulating freedom of speech

I have seen video of the guy that wants to control the content of radio
And frankly i'm very concerned about it

What are your thoughts??

Haven't heard anything about this. But then again, The Daily Show has been in repeats this week.

Can you post a link to what you're talking about?

Go read the actual proposed bill. Has nothing to do with shutting down sites, or infringing on our rights to free speech and press. It gives the President authority to disconnect networks in the event of a declared cyber-emergency. In other words, when a DDoS attack is crippling a network of interest to the US and/or it's infrastructure, networks would start being shut down. Kind of like when we grounded all airplanes on 9/11. No planes in the air, no chance of them being used against us. I do not at all support this bill (or just about anything else Obama supports for that matter), but we need to understand the proposed laws in their entirety, and not spread disinformation!

I didn't see anything pertaining to regulating the Internet at that link...

I have to say I also have a hard time taking anything reported by Fox News at face value. Not that they make stuff up (usually), but their slant on things boggles my mind 99% of the time.

Not that CNN or MSNBC are much better these days...

I'll just stick with the Daily Show. At least it's honest about what it is...

This is why i am asking for other peoples opinion about this

Because the person they want to appoint to this new position has made clear how he thinks about what Venezuela did to there public media and there freedom of speech
he thinks that this is the way we should be...And that is scary to me

Call me paranoid you won't be the first and probably not the last

You can find the full text of the bill at GovTrack: S. 773: Text of Legislation, Introduced in Senate

I've been reading through it, and so far I can't find a thing about "Obama shutting down the internet" as so many bloggers and unreliable news sources have put it.

Sec 18(2) is probably the bit that people are freaking about:
[The President] may declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network;

Doesn't sound like he would have the authority to shut down our blogs or youtube or whatever. Just government agencies and companies like the one my hubby works for. I'm totally ok with them shutting down some of the networks that my husband works on in a time of national emergency. I know the nature of some of the stuff he deals with, and I don't want that stuff getting out or being controlled by a malicious party.

Can you provide a source on that? I haven't read anything from Sen. Rockefeller that would indicate that.

Bill would give president emergency control of Internet

I think it's clear that free speech on the internet needs to be corralled. The dying old media must be revived to continue the lies. Look for a 'cyber 911' excuse to implement the emergency, then some new gov controlled internet to replace it. Once gov gets this new power, they will never relinquish it. Hey, maybe we could get an internet czar? Sweet ! :p
