RPC canes MHRA regulation proposals

The Regulatory Policy Commission, a government body that advises on regulatory activities by government agencies, recently issued their opinion document on the MHRA's proposal to regulate e-cigarettes in the UK by enforcing a pharmaceutical license on all products - in effect a ban on 99% of products. They felt the MHRA showed no evidence for the need to regulate ecigarettes, and that both their evidence base and figures were unconvincing.

The tone throughout is critical, and in government-speak terms it may qualify as highly critical. This seems to indicate that higher government finds regulation of e-cigarettes currently unnecessary and very likely problematic. Such a realistic and pragmatic attitude comes as a breath of fresh air to those accustomed to unreasonable decisions seen elsewhere based on influence by pressure groups, that cannot stand in the long term.

MHRA may now need to restart their regulation introductory process since they have been told that current information is inadequate or incorrect. It's too much to hope that they see sense and just walk away, such a result would cause widespread rejoicing among the sensible and the realistic - apparently a very small minority these days.
