I dig and love dogs, Danes. I worked K-9 and trained dogs. fluked into that job. my brother was a doberman breeder and I helped train puppies for sanction shows. I worked for a security company and became supervisor. I took over training the new dogs though I really only had handling experience. jumped right in. the company I work for now has a huge k-9 division across north america and even dog teams bomb sniffing in Afghanistan. I had been considering getting a dog again and doing that, but so busy with the music now... and I'd need a sidecar to take my dog on motorcycle trips (I actually have been looking at sidecars but dam expensive). the company pays for you to house the dog, all food and vet bills, and an extra $5/hr to start for being a handler. not bad. maybe after we get our music sets learned and I can slow down...

I have 2 dogs and a barn cat. King Collie, Bichon-Poo, Tabby barn cat. I adopted all of them from family members who wanted to get rid of them. Makes me sick, people that get animals and then just want to dump them. Needless to say despite the little Bichon-Poo's attitude and the Collies posture the barn cat rules the roost.

Good for you! I really think that the problem starts with pet stores selling live animals, it should be outlawed IMO. It's so easy for people to walk into a pet store and fall in love with a cute puppy/kitten without thinking that these little creatures are a lot of responsibility, they require a lot of patience, they're not cheap, on average they live well over 10 years, and most importantly they're living beings with feelings! Not a pair of shoes you buy on impulse and leave in a closet or give away when you're sick of them. My pooch that I adopted from a shelter was abandoned in a field in the middle of winter when she was 3 months old! What kind of cold-hearted person could possibly do something like this? One of my good friends rescues dogs from the SPCA and other shelters and rehabilitates and re-homes them and the horror stories she tells me of the conditions in which they find some of these dogs is bone chilling.

Sorry for venting in a totally unrelated thread, and all that to say thank you mopar for being a wonderful person to our furry friends :)

I love dobi's!!!!!! You sound like a real nice guy Pipeous, cuz my motto is, if you see how a guy is around his pets, you will know how he will be around his lady. My pit bull comes out with me on dates, well she did when I dated, and she would let me know right off the fly, if this is someone good or bad. I feel lucky, I really do, to have such magical creatures living under my roof.

I am just as strongly disgusted by animal abuse myself Phil. I love all animals whether they have fur, fins, feathers or scales. The horror stories I know first hand about snakes and lizards being abused, neglected and abandoned (I adopted 2 lovely little snakes myself from a rescue) is just as heartbreaking because they have feelings too. They know fear, pain and hunger just like any other living soul, but because they aren't cuddly they are thought of as lesser living things. It also doesn't help that most people are actually taught to fear them right when they are young.
I also grew up knowing/helping this rescue shelter for dogs and cats and I have so many painful memories of what I saw and heard it definately changed the way I look at the world. I feel much more comfortable hanging out with animals than I do people most times.

.....let me just go get the ball that I threw off way into left field for getting even waaaay more off topic than you Phil....sometimes I just gotta let it out

I will change my profile to a pic of my pack. I just hate trying to resize the images down so far. The lightening bolt was always Pikachu's encase anyone was wondering.

I have helped a local breeder rescue dogs. she called me once to tell me about this german shep she sold. sweet little girl. the owner had her locked up inside a garage. I went into that garage and found this half starved dog, no water... man. I could see her ribs sticking out. I near cried right there. I packed her up into my car and delivered her to her new owner. the woman met the dog, started crying and the 2 went into the kitchen as she was getting her something to eat. I knew she was in a better place...

worst part was this dude found out I was the one who stole his dog. we argued quite heated, but I made him understand he couldn't afford a dog. they had other animals too, and some of those died too. and I'd do it all over again if the situation ever arose.

I don't like spiders and snakes (I hear a jim stafford song in my head now) but I'd go to great measures to protect a dog. part of why I don't want to do K9 again is because I worked with someone else's dog. he was living in a kennel when I got Bruno. he was quite old and had kennel sores. I trained with him and nursed him back. he had some arthritis but a little glucosamine in his dinner bowl for a while and we were running every night. when I quit that company I wanted to buy the dog and let him retire in my home but the owner would rather kennel the dog to die than let me have him since I quit. I did cry the day I returned him. he was 8, which is old for a doby male. that was many years ago and I still think about him.

buying a dog and going through training and certification isn't cheap and requires a huge commitment that I am not sure I could fully commit to

cheers. I am sociable at times, but really like being alone. I like dogs much better than people because you know what you get. they like you or they don't. no hidden agendas. I tolerate cats but prefer birds ;)

I was the only one in my family raised out here. rest came from saskatchewan. farm folk hehe
dam hijacked another thread... DOH I really don't mean to, hell I hijack my own threads.
