Hi! I'm so glad I found this forum. I'm relatively new to vaping. I was smoking 2 packs a day and came down with a terrible case of bronchitis right before switching. I knew something had to change. I love vaping. So much of it I don't really understand. I learn little bits here and there. I hope to learn more here.

My question has to do with coughing. Sometimes I have a tickle in my throat and now... today, I have a cough in my chest. It's not as bad as when I smoked cigarettes. But it's bothersome. I'm not sure what else I can do. I'm on 3 mg nic. It's a high VG. Someone said it may be the flavoring. I don't know. I love this blueberry. Lol! I mix it with tobacco flavoring. Maybe I should go back to straight tobacco flavor and see what happens. Also, I don't think I know how to draw on it very well. I just went down from 6 mg to 3 mg and I'm taking a lot of little hits. I was told the high nic could be causing the cough. I almost want to put a patch on and vape. But I won't. So does anyone have any suggestions? Is it the way I'm inhaling maybe?

Oh, I started with a Cool Fire 4. I was told not to go higher than 6 mg nic on that even though I was a heavy smoker. Now I have a Nebox. So is the equipment affecting me too?

Anyway, thanks. I'm glad to be here!!

Hello and welcome to ECF!

From my own experience when vaping while still a smoker I experienced throat irritation and couching until I quit the cigarettes totally and a few weeks passed without a smoke that subsided. Also with only a pack a day Marlboro Red habit I had a higher need for nicotine. Just my personal experience and not a guide on what is best you. Good Luck and congratulations on joining the ranks of former smokers!

Don't mix vaping with the patch. You'll never know what is causing the ticklish throat.
Do you have cravings for a smoke? You should uptick your nicotine. 6mg is not a lot for a new ex smoker. For your throat, lozenges & drink lots of water..

Daviedog thanks for that suggestion as I am going to throw the lozenges suggestion at a friend I am pushing to continue with her intro into vaping! Great suggestion!

Also hard to say at this point. I coughed up gunk for about 6 months after quiting. The first few times I quit it wasn't as bad but I knew for me at least it wasn't vaping as I had been off the smokes for 2 months. I find I get dry mouth, have to drink more water now. But generally I think it was the coughing, being sick, smelling bad and the quit zits that helped me not go back to smoking. Detoxing can be really intense for some folks.

The very first juice I tried made me cough like crazy. It was much worse than coughing from smoking. The guy in the store said it would get better over time, but it never did. I picked up the analogs again for a few months, until my daughter told me to go to a different vape shop and ask about a solution. In the next vape shop I visited, I was told some juices are just very harsh and make you cough. I picked up a different juice, at the same nicotine level as the first, that worked great with no coughing and I've been vaping happily ever since. I suspect the first juice was just made with not so good, more harsh ingredients, so you might want to go to another vape shop and ask them what juice they would recommend and ask them to let you try it before you buy it.

Thank you so much for the info. I haven't had a cig in a couple of months. Don't know if that's long enough. But I'm definitely going check out this cough to be safe. And I'll check out that one link too. Could be a combination of things.

Hi @Zivie! Welcome to the ECF Forums, and congrats on quitting cigarettes!!

Likely, what is going on is several different factors. Cigarette smoke paralyze and even kill the Cilia that line our respiratory system. These little "brooms" work to sweep impurities in the air we breathe up and out of our system. When we quit, they come back with a flourish, and have a big job ahead of them. Those impurities once transported up top, will tickle our throat and cause us to cough, expelling them.

Also, high VG FEELS very smooth on our throats, but for many, builds up a little fluid in our lungs. Many describe it as "heavy lung" or "wet lung". Cough on a mirror or piece of glass. If there is considerable moisture, could be the problem. I can't do more than 70%VG, and even then I don't inhale deeply. This is a marked difference from the irritation that PG can cause, which is immediate coughing. VG is stealthier and more delayed. If you feel that "heavy lung" feeling, try cutting back VG to 50/50.

Coughing in and of itself is not harmful, and if it's excessive moisture causing it, well, it's just an inconvenient side effect. I can, and do, live with it. I enjoy vaping enough to not let it bother me. :)

I'm a new member, a former smoker, and relatively new to vaping. So I'm with that said I've had a few flavors that happened to to have blueberry in the mixture that also seems to give me a tickle in my throat. The different flavors that had were 16mg, 12mg, and 6mg. Like I said I'm new but I really think its the blueberry that gives me the tickle, scratchy feeling in my throat.

Yes, good point! Myself and a lot of peeps I know, are sensitive to citric acid (lemon, lime, pineapple..) in fruity vapes. Makes my nostrils burn, and my eyes water! Love em, but gotta learn to live with Feelin the Bern!
