Why am I coughing and choking on just 11 mg. of nicotine?

I started off ordering 4 mg. carts. They didn't seem to be doing anything for me. Then I jumped up to 11 mg. They choke me and make me cough! I since went back down to 8 mg. This is a bit better, but I just don't really like the flavor. I just ordered a different flavor in the 8 mg. to try. I have been a 1 to 2 pack smoker for about 30 years. Trying to quit smoking (or just quit tobacco use for now). I'm hoping I can get the flavor/strength issue worked out so I can vape more and smoke less!

Any suggestions? Did anybody else have this choking problem on higher nicotine levels? If my problem is caused by the strength of the nicotine, I don't see how anybody can smoke these 24 mg. and higher without choking to death!!

Talk to me.

I can vape 36 VG based liquid all day, and don't have any problem with choking. But you give me a 12mg PG and it's instant cough and sore throat.
I recommend you get some VG based liquid to try. It is not only much smoother on the throat, but also produces way more vapor than the PG stuff.
In general...VG=more vapor...PG=more throat hit.

Vapor inhaling is a little different from smoke inhaling. There is a definite learning curve. I always take vapor in my mouth and then inhale a little bit or exhale through my nose. This stopped the coughing for me. There is also the quality and strength of the liquid you're using. I started making my own at the beginning of my vaping journey. I've just discovered that I don't care for the base liquid in the Dekang liquids. Certain flavors are better than others, but I'm going to sell the rest. I've dropped our strength down to between 8 and 10 mg/ml depending on the flavor.

I dont actually think it is the nicotine that is making you cough.

As others have said vaping is not smoking and once you learn the technique things should improve.
Long slow draw - hold in your mouth for a couple of seconds - Inhail - Exhail .
You dont need to hold it in your lungs for as long as you do with cigarettes and as wolf says nasal exhail gives it a lot more flavour.

I have also come accross liquid that not only makes me cough but also sneeze, I get a runny nose like I am coming down with the flu and it is definately something they have put in it for the flavour that causes this as other liquid from the same manufacturer has no ill effect.
I tried lower nic versions of this liquid but I get the same symptoms.
Real bummer as the flavour is one of the best I ever tried.

I use a joye 510 and the pre-loaded carts that came with my unit are nasty. I took one hit and that was enough. I had read enough here at ECF prior to getting my e-cig to know that the pre-loaded carts were pretty bad so I already had a few bottles of juice on hand when my 510 arrived. Much better.

what is the difference between VG and PG? Thanks for helping.
Do yourself a favor and check out the abbreviations thread here in the the new members forum. I would have been lost without it.

And what is the difference between VG and PG?
PG versus VG juices
PG is propylene glycol and VG is vegetable glycerin.
Either of these ingredients can be purchased relatively cheaply and easily by themselves.
They can be used for making your own liquid if desired. or for cutting juice you have purchased.

As far as differences go, this is what I have gathered from reading things here and there.

1) VG is thicker (more viscous)
2) VG vaporizes at a lower temperature
3) VG produces better vapor
4) VG is somewhat sweeter

Because of the above...

1) VG does not wick quite as well
2) VG may gunk up your atomizer more quickly
3) VG produces a somewhat cooler vapor which may reduce throat hit

PG made me cough too. It wasn't the nic. VG unflavored nic juice has never made me cough, but some flavors do. Which ones? It doesn't matter, as flavors interact with everyone differently. So it could be PG, and it might be a flavor your lungs do not like. Try removing flavors and switching to VG if you can, then add flavors back, if you really want to do a controlled study. At the very least you can try unflavored PG, which will tell you if it is a flavor.

Coughing is something I think more people should take seriously since its your body saying I DON'T LIKE THAT, STOP!! So thanks for asking. Good luck!

I vape pg liquid and pretty much always have since 2008,the majority of them do not make me cough which is why I have deducted it is something added to a particular liquid as opposed to the pg or the nicotine.

VG on the other hand made me ill .

But that is me and we are all different.

The carts peeew not very nice flavour to them.

At first I think it would be best for you to try some pre-mixed commercial liquid .
Its easy to use you just drip a few drops on to your cart and vape .
Keep the cart moist, not flooded with a pool on top and you will get the best results.

Buy small amounts 5-10ml bottles to start with untill you find a flavour you like.

Your taste will change in the first few weeks so anything you think you dont like, put aside and give it a go next month.
