I don't like 'em! Very hard to tell difference between read and unread.

Yeah I don't like the new layout it's too cluttered I preferred the old theme, hope they give us the option to return to it

At present we are just using the default template as re-installing the ECF template may take some time - and in any case we don't want to start that until the main upgrade work is completed.
A template by the way is the way that pages on a database-driven site are built. It's a custom layout with shapes, colors and graphics that can be varied for each template / website. The ECF 'look' is a custom template that is installed instead of the default one. A 'default' item is the fallback or basic one that comes with the software, and that is used as standard. Of course, we won't be keeping that one. Let me repeat this:
WE ARE NOT KEEPING THIS TEMPLATE (SITE APPEARANCE)
WE ARE GOING BACK TO THE ECF TEMPLATE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
We will also re-install the dark template option - and maybe one or two more templates as options that you can switch to in your user control panel. It would be nice to get at least one option for improved accessibility for those with non-standard vision.

yes, I am happy to know that when the upgrade is finalized,
the old template will return,
