Was it really about the vaping or more I had brought up someting that I and the interviewer could relate too. Who knows.....;)

I've done the hiring for our IT department where I work, and I'll tell you my impression of it.

When an interviewer asks what your greatest accomplishment is, 99% of the people use this opportunity to brag about how much better they are than everyone else in something. Scoring the winning goal for our team, winning some award, graduating top of the class, it's always "I'm the best, be impressed".

Your answer was the opposite. You didn't say how you were better than anyone else, your greatest accomplishment was in making yourself better than you were. THAT is precisely the type of person I look for when hiring people. You thinking you're the greatest person on earth doesn't impress me, but your willingness to admit your flaws and work on improving yourself definitely does. Could be quitting smoking and vaping instead, which I would also relate to, but in general, I'm looking for someone who tries to be better than they already are, not someone who thinks they're already the best and thus, doesn't try to improve.

It's strange I've been looking for another job because I couldn't vape at work so I've just been putting the odd application out here an there, had one or two interviews but nothing came of them. Then on Monday I went for an interview and there was like 20 other people there, I thought to myself "dont think you've got much hope here Matty".
Anyway I went through what I can only discribe as a slightly dusturbing "team building" group interview and found myself called in for a one on one. I went through the normal routine going through my work history, strengths and why I would be good for the job and I could tell the interviewer didn't look too interested.

Then the question came "What would you say is your greatest achievement?". I thought what the heck I'll just say it "My greatest achievement is quitting smoking after 16 years and smoking twenty a day" Instantly I could see the interviewers eyes widen and a slight smile come over their face. I added "I tryed and failed many times before then tryed vaping and have never looked back". "I DID THE SAME THINNG!" she said with a big smile on her face. Then for about 10 min's we just chatted about different mod and atty's we had.

A couple of days later I got a call.... "so... can you start tomorrow?"

Life can be pretty good sometimes. :)
