    Hello and welcome!

Yes, e-cigarettes can help you stop smoking.

    Welcome Jerry!

I haven't had a cigarette since March, and I'm much less concerned with vaping and its potential side effects than what I know smoking did/does. I know my lungs and sinuses are clearer than they've been in almost 30 years. I don't wake up hacking up phlegm EVERY MORNING (and often throughout the day) My clothes and my car (and *I*) smell better. I don't have lingering "cigarette breath" that I taste throughout the day....

Do your homework. Vaping, like smoking, is a personal choice. Yes, I've exchanged one habit for another, but my personal opinion is that this is infinitely desirable to smelling like an ashtray for the rest of my life. This is what's right for *me* - it may not be right for you.

I hope you find the answers for which you're looking.

I was a two pack a day smoker for over thirty years. I tried the gum, the patch, Zyban, you name it.

Started vaping March 2013. My last cigarette was April 15, 2013 and I have no interest in going back.

Far as dangerous goes... 45 smokers die every hour of every day.

    Vapers? 0 per hour?

E-liquds are made up of PG and/or VG. Both products are "GRAS". That is, "generally recognized as safe". PG is used in asthma inhalers, injectable medications (yeah, in hospitals, injected, into your body), food products (you may have eaten PG more than once today). VG is used in tons of consumer products. Check some labels. You'll find PG and VG all over your house right now.

The flavors? Baking supplies. Ever had candy? You not only got the flavorings used in vapor but those often have PG in them too. And they give those to children. Notice nobody panicking.

There are 4000+ chemicals in tobacco smoke. Over 50 are known to cause cancer. Vapor uses FOOD PRODUCTS except for one: nicotine. Which, by itself, is NOT a carcinogen and is about as dangerous as caffeine (which, by the way, is addictive also).

Can anybody tell you vaping is "perfectly safe"? Not really. But you tell me. Food products (PG, VG, flavorings) that *YOU EAT ALL THE TIME* plus some nicotine verses over 50 cancer causing chemicals being inhaled into your lungs repeatedly.

    What do you think?

I think of it as harm reduction. Well, a LOT of reduction. 4000+ substances replaced by just a few, all FDA approved and no known carcinogens. I took up vaping on November 13, 2012, the day I smoked my last cigarette. Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find the answers you're looking for.

Hi ive just started vaping.i was a light smoker 6 /7a day..is 18mg nicotine too strong?& causing my shortness of breath/hard to get a good breath ????

I would definitely try cutting back on your nicotine level. I was a two pack a day smoker (40+ cigs per day) and don't go high as 18 most times. I vape around half that. Though, granted, I like vaping and vape a lot.

That said, it would be very, very hard to get nicotine poisoning by vaping. The levels just aren't that high. Unless you're drinking your juices. In which case, cut it out. :)

Two things. One is that smoking causes shortness of breath. Any amount. You may have been a light smoker but that doesn't mean your smoking hasn't caused the problem. And it can take time for your lungs to clear after you quit. It's not going to happen overnight.

Two is that a few people do have allergic reactions to PG or VG (the base liquids in e-liquids). You can try 100% PG and, separately, 100% VG to see if one or the other causes the problem.

But while nicotine poisoning can include breathing problems (such as here: Nicotine poisoning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), the dosage levels are really high. Around 6.5–13 mg/kg orally. I keep 12mg/ml plain around... cripes, I'd have to drink half the bottle straight to get that level of exposure!

Still, a light smoker? Yeah I'd slash my nic in half. I was a heavy smoker and can coast along between 9 to 12. You may be able to drop to 6 or lower even. Better to start low and have to come up than the other way round.
