Where to start......?

Well, new member here, so I guess that's first off. Thanks for the site and the wealth of information (it's almost too much information at once). Long time smoker, almost 20 years, eek.... I really start to feel my age when I type that.....

So, I have been trying to quit for almost two years, give or take. Success, if measured by the amount of attempts, I was doing ok. Some long stretches (couple of months) and some short stretches (couple of hours). Tried a lot of different things; patches, gum, meds, dip, snus, etc. Finally bit the bullet and got an Encore kit from my local tobacco shop.

Not a bad first purchase, all things considered. As with most things (I also do RC Helicopters), you usually end up buying the wrong thing first, but that's ok. I'm not really tied down to the "wrong thing" theory, because I think I had a relatively painless entry into vaping. Could it have been a better experience? Maybe... But, probably not without a significant cost dump. Ultimately, I think I had to figure out of this was the right road for me to even start down. Now, I'm convinced.

Long story short, I just ordered an eGo and I'm also looking at a Prodigy V3.1. So much for starting small right? I'm also looking at all the adapters and even though I'm reading through all the threads (as much as possible) it's starting to run together and I almost feel analysis paralysis. So, as far as I can tell, this Encore e-cig is an 808D-1 type model. Can someone explain why there is a difference in the number/model schema?

Look forward to asking more questions and getting to know the community more (believe me, I have a lot of questions, but I'm withholding until I read some more and hopefully I can find the answers on my own).

Hello and welcome! If you are asking about the different models as in 510, 901, 808D then it is based on the threading so certain atomizers (or cartomizers) will on fit on certain batteries. You can always buy adapters to interchange them. Have you looked at the bottom feeder box mods (Reo, Phideus, ect...)?

between here and there
Hello and welcome to ecf. The eGo is a good starting place for a long time smoker. There are several different models for the eGo. The 650, 900, 1000, They are all 510 threads and the numbers indicate battery life between charges. If you want an all day battery, then the 900 or 1000 is good. If you are around the computer all day and have access to a usb port you might want to look at the ego passthrough. with those you don't run out of power. The can be unplugged from the usb and then they act just like a reg battery.
If you want and KR808D battery, look a vapor4life. These batteries don't have as much charge tho and can be a pita unless you have several.
Glad you found us.....and ask away with your questions.

:)

So, the 510, 901, 808D refer to threading. Took a look at the modding section, there really is a lot in there. I may eventually mod something, but I haven't gotten that far in yet. I do like having a tank of sorts, but I'd like to keep the flavor and vapor consistency up. That's part of the reason I shied away from the eGo-T, some of the reports were good and some were bad. At a fifty-fifty split, I'll put that one on the back burner. Speaking of, I'm noticing the cartomizers that came with this Encore heat up pretty quickly and start to get a slight burn taste in the draw. Is my draw too deep or are the carts not filled enough (or both)? What are good cartridges or cartomizers (model wise; 510, 901, etc) or does it even matter?

The models for the eGo (650, 900, 1000) denote the mAh? Keep in mind, I'm a technical guy (RC Helicopters and Cameras), so don't shy away from getting down into the weeds with terminology but just give me a starting point on the reference. I'm pretty stoked about vaping and Monday was my litmus test for seeing how this experience was going. I had no desire to get a pack of smokes or have one after vaping all weekend. I can already see the limitation with the cartomizers (noted above) and want a better experience. I'm just not a 100% on the whole drip/atty thing. There still is a cartridge that's loaded with e-liquid, correct? Or am I skipping the cartridge and just dripping straight to the atty? I'm a little confused in this area and I haven't really been able to figure it out from the myriad of FAQ threads, mostly due to information overload. I keep seeing to drip onto the atty, but then I see attach the cartridge. So.... I'm a little lost on what to do with the eGo, at least until I get it (I hope). Not sure what's compatible with it or what I should be looking to get.

As a side note, I haven't really found a good thread on how to take apart my current cartomizers (at least in layman's terms or for just about everyone). Yeah, there are videos out there, but they involve using rare tools or fabricated tools to pop off the end cap. Past that, pretty much every video is the same. I found that the binder clip tab (the sliver part) from a binder clip works perfectly (at least a small one) for taking off that rubber top.

FYI there are two different KR808D's

KR808D-1 - the recommended model here, also sold by Vapor4Life.com, the threading supported by manufacturers for new kinds of accessories and cartomizers and adapters

KR808D-2 - a near-twin with incompatible threads, the favorite 2-piece of rebranders, many of whom are ripoffs. Fortunately, leCig sells D1 to D2 and D2 to D1 adapters.

when you drip you drip a few drops right on the atty, and usually use a drip tip but can also use an empty cart as one to keep your lips from getting too hot. so far nothing tops dripping on my prodigy v3.1 as of now, for me anyways. but my ego with a clearomizer is close by for driving and when i just want to grab it and smoke it. i also have a joye stick v3 close by loaded with a tobacco flavor. id say if you buy a ego kit, also get a drip tip and a box of clearo XLs to go with it. it will be like an extra $13-15 for both.

also the prodigy v3.1 is VERY nice. i love mine. i cant have a regular pv on me while at work because its constantly getting dry fired and ive had ego batteries come apart in my pocket. i have a very physical job.... the locking button works flawless. if you have the extra money and dont mind a mini mag sized pv, id buy one

Which one is the Encore version?
