Hi people. I'm new to ecigs and looking for a good brand/model for my wife, who has resumed smoking and expressed interest in the smokeless method.

I want something that's low cost and dependable, preferably with some flavor options. I've heard that cartridges aren't the most economical way to go? Can you use liquid and still get a reliable measurement of how much you're using? Do some models only use cartridges, or is liquid always an option?

I'm afraid I don't even know enough to ask good questions, so forgive my ignorance. ;)

I'm sure that you will get all kinds of input on what to get. One of the most common favorites is a 901 model and many suppliers sell this. I started with an 801/pen style because the cartridges are bigger and held more juice.

All the products are designed to hold cartridges, but a lot of people are cutting out the cart and dripping liquid directly into the atomizer, which is what I do.

You shouldn't have to pay more than $40 - $50 for a starter kit. This will typically get you a couple of batteries, an atomizer and a few different cartridges, plus the charging system.

As far as a reliable one, mmmmmmmmm....................

I consider all the components as consumables, not just the juice/carts. Atomizers are an unstable item and can have a life anywhere from Dead on Arrival to months, but I feel lucky if I can get a month out of one. Don't be caught without atomizers. I just ordered 25 of them to make sure.

Batteries are batteries and they will die. Some sooner, some later. I have as a backup source, a USB passthrough for the times I'm caught with dead batteries.

Now, regular cigarettes on the other hand, don't have these problems and work every time you light them up. So know going in that the trade off takes some getting used to, but it is well worth it, you just have to work at it.

I am not trying to discourage you in any way, I'm just letting you know that it takes more work to vape than it does to smoke.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Very helpful info. I've been looking at the 510, and have already discovered it goes by different names and I've seen the same kit vary from $33 for the True Man-510 to $55 for the Joye. Also seen the 901 and 401 mentioned quite a bit. It seems different models do best with different drags? Any idea which would work best with a light to medium drag?

What's the advantage here? Cost? Efficiency? Performance?

You spare the need for new carts and don't waste unused liquid stuck in them when discarded ( unless using another method in a thread which it was suggested to put the filling into a syringe and squeeze the unused liquid out )

@krowten: I was in the same boat. And I've got some insane OCD about things. I actually stayed up for 2 days reading, talking and trying to figure it out and ended up buying a 510. Seems easy enough, but make sure you read, read, read so you're ready. There seems to be a lot you can do with this stuff. I was so into getting one, I picked it up from Drew. He runs Nhaler, GREAT SITE and a great guy! (Feel free to read all the rave reviews on here about him). Hope this helps.

Hi,
Check out Vapor 4 life, Vapor King. I have had mine for a week and love it! I chose it mainly for the ease of use as I did not want to fiddle with dripping, stuffing etc. I just wanted something at hand, ready to go when I needed it. The cartomizers are disposable, but, easily refilled anywhere from 3 to 5 times before needing to be tossed.
The flavors are awesome as well as the customer service.
I am delighted with my choice (my first ecig) and enjoying an analog free life!

Best of luck to you and your wife!

There is absolutely no need to discard any carts unless they are physically broken. I've been using the same ones for months. They can be cleaned, refilled, and the fiber can be replaced if needed.

I would suggest a new user become familiar with the e-cig operation before dripping. Dripping without understanding may cause some grief.

Yes to all 3.

First, keep in mind that I'm running a 5+ volt Prodigy, which runs hotter than the stock 3.7 volts.

The first reason I started dripping is that I noticed when the carts were running dry, I would get an off taste. I thought maybe the cart filler might be burning and I didn't want to inhale that.

Then having to find what I needed in stock somewhere. I started cleaning them and refilling them myself. I would drip sometimes and do carts sometime. I would also put a couple drops before the cart then throughout the day.

Now I pulled the carts out of the equation all together. Less stuff to buy, less stuff to carry, less stuff to do, less stuff to worry about.

Again, I am using a higher voltage system, which may make dripping a friendlier option than on a 3.7v system.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to go with a 510 kit w/PCC and some extras from healthcabin. I needed white (the wife insisted) so my choices of dealers were limited. Since their prices were very good, the $15 shipping wasn't a bad hit.

We'll see how she likes the 510, and I'll keep reading up on other models, just in case.
