Hi to all. First time member to any Forum so bit of a learning curve for me. 73 today and have smoked for 60 of those years up until the 1st of January this year when I thought that I would try to quit smoking for the nth time by giving the vape liquids a try. Anyway I haven't had a cigarette since then, so changing the nicotine delivery method has worked for me. For the past month or so I have researched all the diy information that I could find on the web, and have to date made a few small batches of e liquid, ok ish so far. The thing that brought me to this forum was the amount of material that I have read talking about the safety aspect of some of the chemicals used in the flavours. This is in fact what got me started on the diy path. I am hoping that I may be able to learn, from people far more knowledgeable than me on this forum, the better choices to make when choosing or mixing flavours.

Congratulations.

On flavoring chemicals I'm not sure there is any good information available. They are all approved for food, but none have been approved for inhalation as far as I know. Maybe menthol since it's used in cigarettes. There was a big rumpus a while back about one called diacetyl. The evidence that it was harmful was pretty thin, but the juice makers mostly stopped using it anyway.

Given that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of chemicals used in flavoring I guess it's possible some of them have harmful effects. On the other hand a lot of people have been vaping for over a decade and no health problems have been observed, so any bad effects are likely to be minor or rare.

Welcome to ECF! There’s a very active diy thread with lots of veteran mixers. They helped me tremendously when I first started diy. Come join the crew at Random DIY mixing and More

the safety aspect of some of the chemicals used in the flavours.

I smoked cigarettes 50+ years...before switching to vaping 5+ years ago...

I am an energy conservationist (ie.lazy)...thus have never considered DIY...

I figure if someone could find any non-healthful substance in ejuice...it still couldn't compare to the 4000+ chemicals/substances that I was inhaling with my cigarettes...(without hardly ever thinking twice about it)…

    Hi, and happy birthday!

I too tried everything many times and never could quit until I tried vaping. Soon after I started mixing. It’s trial and error, but even accounting for the fails it’s a huge savings, and not only do you have control over what goes in it, you can also easily mix up whatever nic level and pg/vg ratio that will work for you in your gear. And that can be hard to find in a flavor that suits you with commercial juice.

Make yourself at home in the DIY and please ask anything.

Welcome Ken, glad you made the s w itch!

Compared to cigs I don't get overly caught up in the ingredients of the flavors I use for DIY. That said, when I see two versions of the same flavor I get the one without known bad chemicals.

On the websites that sell flavors, most list if the flavoring has known chemicals. Usually, just click on the flavor and a window opens to tell you more about the flavor and it's make-up.

There is a ton more information in the DIY sub-forum.

    Good luck!

    Hi Ken, and welcome!

I'm in a similar situation. I picked three flavors, and mix small batches with tiny amounts of flavor--.25-.5ml in a 100ml batch. This is enough so you don't taste the coils/cotton, and, if they're harmful, at least there's not much of them in the first place.

Yesterday, I made a big batch of 25mg/ml (I use 100% VG--not for everybody--for sure, but I love a smooth vape), and I put it in a pump bottle. When I want to fill a tank, I dispense what I want and mix it with a small amount of already flavored juice.
