Hi everybody. This looks like a fantastic forum and I'm very happy to be here. I'm a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities so please excuse my ignorance. I would like some help taking the next step from an unsuccessful first step at vaping. My story: I've been rolling cigarettes for about forty years so I'm used to a pretty strong tar and nicotine hit. I average about 4 cigarettes a day taking hits in groups of 3 or so throughout the day. I bought type 510 e-cigs a couple of years ago. last time I tried to quit I got hypnotized and had those e-cigs to fall back on. But they just didn't give me the full body sensation that filterless cigarettes give me. Maybe I missed the feeling of inhaling death. I just don't know. So now I'm gearing up for another go. I want to buy the most powerful e-cigsbut the choices are confusing. It can big and bulky and ugly. I mostly smoke alone. I went to the corner store where they have the Vapage Uturn 1300 mAh and they say it's the most powerful and it's got a voltage adjustment from 3.3 to 4.8 volts. Maybe I should get one that can be modified as the technology evolves. What do you think?

Thank you!

The Vapage Uturn 1300 mAh is only an ego class battery and is only an intermediate step in the vaping chain. An APV or mod will go up to 6 volts.

Advancing Up the Vaping Ladder with Ego's & Mods

There's several paths that you could take. You could give that Vapage Ego a go. Many people start out with an adjustable voltage Ego battery and stick with that and are happy. Others find that they get more satisfaction from a mod that uses replaceable rechargeable batteries with even more power and other options.

Do more research and don't make an impulse buy. You did well to find ECF and ask for suggestions from experienced vapors who have been in your shoes. Educate yourself to make an informed decision on what to buy. Learn about battery types, juice attachment types, and e-liquids. At the very top of this page is a link to the Info Zone which has basic information about vaping. Below is my blog which has 10 articles that I have written for novice and intermediate vapors.

E-Cigarette Forum - Baditude - Blogs

There is a LOT of information on this forum. Everyone will suggest something different for you to try. This can result in information overload. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Try to fit the suggestions into your particular needs. We all have made some mistakes along the way, so don't feel pressured to get it right every time.

Honestly, for a smoker of your type, I'd suggest getting a smaller mod, one of the stealth type mechanical ones that use 18350 type batteries. Since you don't tend to smoke all day, you should be able to stretch a batter with a lower charge time. The smaller battery gives a smaller mod. From there, you could either put a kick in it and set a wattage preference, or learn to build your own coils. Low resistance coils give a hotter vape, which I think would suit you, but running a low resistance setup has some safety concerns. You would have to get the right batteries to handle the load that they require. I don't know if an 18350 can handle it, as I've been researching the largers batteries, since size does not concern me. You'd have to dig in here to find out. Last, find yourself a 100% PG liquid, with 36mg nicotine to start with. That setup would give you a very heavy throat hit, and a ton of nicotine in a smaller session. You wouldn't be exhaling huge clouds, but the sensation would be similar to inhaling a very well stoked, hot pipe, with a heavy dose of nicotine. From there you could experiment with different PG and nicotine concentrations.

For me the best vape has been a mechanical mod with a rechargeable 18650 AW IMR battery in it, topped with a Trident rebuildable dripping atomizer. If you like the hot potent sensation of a filter-less tobacco cigarette, you would love the set up I am describing. The vape is powerful - tons of vapor - very warm, and almost too much in the throat. Almost. Actually perfect for those who like it strong.

The only challenge with what I'm recommending is there's a small learning curve to getting it set up. You have to learn how to wrap a coil and wick it with cotton. But I learned in one day, and I'm not super "handy," so I'm confident you can master it quickly as well.

Here is a picture of it - granted - it looks nothing like a cigarette. But since you say you "smoke" alone, the appearance shouldn't matter to you. (Also, you don't have to make yours all "girly" like I did.) I assume you are sitting at home when you vape/smoke. This is perfect for that, as you do have to keep dripping more juice into the atty every 6 hits or so. But it's worth it - so worth it. Feel free to PM me if you want links to where to buy and a small tutorial of how to set it up.

Trust me, you can try a ton of different equipment, but this is the best. Might as well skip over the rest and get going with something that satisfies your cravings on every level. Think of all the money you'll save skipping right to the top.

Hi enjolis and welcome.

Any eGo-class variable voltage battery would be a great introduction to vaping--Joyetech eGo Twist, Vision Spinner or Kanger Evod VV are all great choices. Grab also a couple of good clearomizers--an eVod or T3 from Kanger and maybe an iClear 16 if you think you might like top-coil, dual coils design. Then find some good juice.

If vaping turns out to be your thing, you can always upgrade to a more powerful APV.

Good luck and happy vaping.

I have another take on what may work for you.

Don't worry about what device to use. Instead look to get a similar experience from Vaping that you get from your roll your own cigs.

It depends if you are going to Vape like you smoked. 4 or 5 times a day?

You mentioned throat hit and feeling the nicotine effects. So make sure you get a fairly high nicotine level ejuice. 24 mg or maybe even 36.

Ejuice will not taste like tobacco. All the tobacco flavors are actually pretty sweet. So find one you like.

If you really like it, you may Vape more often than you smoked. If so, you can get lower nic level ejuice.

Don't get caught up in the equipment. Yet......

Just do what you need to do to get off tobacco. You can upgrade later.

Good luck to you

I'd say a voltage adjustable EGO type battery IS a good way to start.
If that Uturn isnt overpriced, it may not be a bad setup.

But you didn't say what the local shop was recommending to hold the juice (the "clearomizer" or "tank" or whatever) or what they're charging. If you are OK shopping online, you can find a better setup - particularly, getting known and trusted brands of similar equipemnt, so you're less likely to have trouble with it.

For instance, here is a great starter kit with TWO batteries, a charger, and you pick 2 juice toppers.
I recommend the EVOD - it's easy to fill and delivers good flavor too. Total - about $70.

Next step up?
Maybe an Innokin MVP. Still don't have to choose removable batteries and a charger for them, still easy to use, but it'll last longer, and looks TOTALLY unlike a cigarette! $65 plus, pick a topper (same ones are good - EVOD or maybe ProTank)...

so most have said it, your first goal is to get something that works for you
so you can just Vape successfully -- like a 1300 spinner and an EVOD tank -- it is simple and always works
then it turns into a backup when you step up to the next level

Vision Spinner 1300mah - Blue
or
Katana Kit
or
Kanger eVod Kit - Black

good luck :)

Now that I've learned so much I have some more questions. I saw some good stuff out there thanks to your links. What are the different effects of voltage control vs wattage control? Some of them have both. My old 510 said not to vape lying down which I do with cigarettes when I read ( I know bad) Is that a problem with any of these devices? Here is the link to the Vapage I was talking about. Vapage U-Turn 1300mAh Kit - Black The corner store sells it for $60. It's more than online but I like to shop local if I can. But I also want to get the best device because I want it to work this time. Thank you again.

There is actually a new vapor culture forming out there. I'm actually new to this also just started vaping August 17 2013 but I am already making my own juices and building my own mods even doing rebuildable tanks and drip atomizers. You tube has a lot of vaping videos on how to do alot of things related to rebuilding, DYI juice ect.......... If you have regular web access I would start by watching as many videos as you can learn as much as you can before spending another dollar. I have wasted at least 150 dollars since August on thing that did not work for me. Now after the info I have found here and watching videos I have the perfect setup for actually quite a reasonable price.

Hi enjolis and welcome to ECF. You've already got a lot of great suggestions. I want to add one more. IMO the biggest part of the vape experience comes from the juice delivery device (atomizer, clearomizer, cartomizer or rebuildable atomizer (RBA)) you put on the battery. That is as long as you have enough power from the battery to run the system. And also the juice.

I think you need a lot of flavor, throat hit, vapor and nicotine. IMO RBA's do this the best, but with a long learning curve that I would not suggest you try yet until you know more about vaping. Cartomizers in tanks are second best, but still very good and much easier to learn to setup and use. The best info package on cartotanks around here is in Baditude's blogs here. Almost any variable volt battery will drive this very well.

Then there is the juice selection. The higher the nicotine content the more the throat hit will be. I suggest you try a starting selection of small bottles including 18, 24 and around 30 mg/ml nic and see how they work for you. Once you have something that will work for you you can take the time re-evaluate your situation and move forward in whichever direction you want. You should then have a much better idea of where you stand. Best of luck with it :thumb:

Most juice delivery devices like to be vaped either vertical, horizontal, or inverted to some degree, or somewhere in between. That is hard to control sometimes when you are lying down. Other than that, I have not found that it matters.

I'm new here and have found so much info that is so great. Thanks, to all...unknown to you maybe, but you all have been a great support in my efforts to kick a 40 year, 2 pack a day lung destroying habit. This vaping is working for me. Thanks for all the tips I have been learning and incorporating. Now, if I could just get over being ticked believing that most of the adversity against vaping must be spurred on by profiteering cigarette and pharmaceutical companies who don't want me or others to find this kind of relief... And heck vaping is fun. I'm gonna have to start going to the gym so I can get enough muscles to hold up one of those big battery mods in case this granny needs to participate in civil disobedience over vaping some day.

For a new guy you've just been hit with so many posts regrading what to buy that all I'm going to say is welcome to ECF!
It's real easy to feel overwhelmed and get overloaded with information.
Take your time and don't let any of this discourage you.
Here's wishing you the best!

@ Vwls- What mech ^^ is that? VERY nice!!
I'm also using a Trident.
I like them so much I just bought 3 more.

Ok, with your local corner store saying that, I would never ever shop there for vape gear again. 1300 mAh just indicates the amount of charge storage. And they do make bigger ego style batteries than that. Obviously the owner/clerk don't no Vape from moonshine. It's probably just the most powerful that they carry. If your going to go ego style don't buy from them.

VV & VW are basically the same thing, just different ways of looking at it. With a given ohm coil if you adjust the volts up, your coil will burn more watts. Lower the voltage and you lower the watts that the coil produces. You can dial in the voltage to find the sweet spot for the juice you are vapping. That's how VV works.

With VW, your device reads that coil ohms and sets the voltage that delivers the watts you have selected as your preferred setting. The Idea is that once you found your sweet spot and set you watts you can change you atomizer or rebuild it with a coil that has a different ohm ratting and the device will automatically change the voltage being used to deliver that wattage across the coil. Set and for get it right? Well almost. The problem is that every flavor has a different sweet spot for ones own personal taste, and regardless of which method you choose to use, invariantly one is still changing their watts or volts to dial in the juice.

Personally, I'd recommend looking into something better than an ego style battery, something like a Provari, Innokin VTR or SVD, a reo, or telsa, or Vamo or Lavatube. a VV and or VW device. Something with a replaceable battery, that is quality, well built and will last for years. Check out all the reviews and comparisons on the devices that interest you, then buy what you like once you can make an educated decision. Then get a Aspire Vivi Nova BDC tank or a Kanger Protank. I'd lean towards the Aspire, they have been getting great reviews. After you have selected your gear and found a few good juices, then look into DIY juices, and make the custom juice of your choice. Also look into a quality rba. once you are up and vapping and digging what it's about. This at first sounds like a PIA, but once you start building great coils, you never go back to pre coiled disposable atomizers. On everything, just find what makes sense to you and go with what you like. There is no one best device or atomizer. Every thing has it's good points and weaknesses. Find the style and method that fits you.

With my Provari and the Russian rba, I do vape in bed while reading and don't have a problem with it. Hope I answered some of you questions and gave you something to think about. Good luck in you quest for vappeness, and welcome to the forum.
