Went to my local Mountain Oak Vapor B&M last week because I've wanted to try squanking for awhile and got a new Kanger Dripbox. I also wanted to prepare for the vapocolyps so I picked up and $3 Colonial mech clone. Now my istick 50's are in semi-retirement. I really enjoy the non-regulated vapes!

Now for my question... While the mods were very well priced the battery chargers available in the store had quite a markup so I've been using the Dripbox to charge my single 2500 mah LG 18650. It hits great for a few hours but not long enough to switch to the mech without recharging first. To facilitate this I've been pass-through vaping on the Dripbox, which is supposedly not supported even though it works. If I keep doing this will I blow my face off? Before anyone suggests the obvious - I will be getting more batteries and a charger from Amazon come payday.

Not suggested, but you can. Being you state you will be getting more batteries it should out until then. Ebay and Amazon are generally not the most reliable places for batteries and chargers, being US State Side I'd suggest - illumn.com, imrbatteries.com, liionwholesale.com, orbtronic.com, or rtdvapor.com (they all carry authentic batteries and reputable, will have even chargers, battery wraps, battery cases and such, liionwholesale ships batteries in battery cases if you buy batteries in pairs so free 2 bay battery cases :) ) they will also be cheaper most times. Regulated mods I'd suggest buying 2x the batteries needed to run the mod, ie single battery mod get 2 batteries, double battery get 4 batteries, that way one set is being charged or is charged while the others are in service, mech/unregulated I suggest 4x batteries, single mech tube mod 4x batteries, double battery mech get 6 to 8 batteries, this sets up a proper battery use/charge rotation, battery comes out of the mod set it aside at least 30minutes before recharging, charge it, set it aside again for another 30minutes at least allows the ions to settle and rest instead of being constantly in an excited stated and lets the internals of the battery to cool down properly.

Thanks for the info, I will check out those vendors. I really hate blowing my face off. :)

I'm going to out on a limb and say NO you're most likely not going to blow your face off due to all the safety features in regulated mods. You need to suffer a series of unfortunate events in order for a regulated mod to blow up in your face: ie- board fails at soft cutoff and continues to fire, then your vent holes get plugged up and somehow with all that extra space in your regulated mod enough pressure builds up so that it actually explodes instead of spewing out hot gas and liquid.

Thank you for reposting this Baditude. I was beginning to toy with the idea of buying a mech mod due to the deeming regs. This just reminded me that I DO NOT have the knowledge, patience, or attention span necessary to live in the mech world.

Hmmm, that's too bad that this article had that effect on you. Mech mods do require a bit more knowledge, attention, and diligence than a regulated mod does. However, I feel a mech mod in an informed user's hands is just as safe as a regulated mod.

IMHO, a mech mod and a rebuildable atomizer is the best answer to the upcoming FDA regulations.

If it's the single battery drip box then it is not regulated.

There is some short circuit protection, and you can power the mod down.

I have seen a comment on the dripbox thread that it applies the battery voltage to the atty, and will fire as low as 0.06ohms. dripbox

I don't think its clear yet exactly how sophisticated or not the protection is.

Because of this I would treat this in the same way I would treat a mech.

Mech mods are:

Beautiful (potentially)
Compact (potentially)
Powerful (potentially)
Ergonomic (potentially)
Simple
User serviceable
Durable (assuming they are maintained)
Involved ~ e.g. the difference between a car with an automatic gear box and one with a manual. The manual gear box requires more user input, but delivers far more control of the engine and provides a far more 'involved' experience.

Mech mods are not:

Safe in unknowledgeable hands (but with sufficient knowledge and used respectfully just as safe as regulated devices)
Plug-and-play
Intuitive
Consistent/Efficient (power levels decrease as battery voltage falls)
For everyone
