They are built with a small metal tank (a cheaper model's tank would hold about a pint). Water is filled about 3/4 full into the tank, and they are usually sold with a basket that hangs into the depth of the water, without touching the sides (the tank waves causes objects to vibrate, and touching the sides can damage the ultrasonic).
I usually loosen the cap to allow the liquid to "breathe", and place the bottles in the basket for a time, anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple hours... only a couple hours when I'm in overkill mode.
Then I test, and let the liquid sit for a time, cool dark place as always. Sometimes I may repeat the process if I'm testing for results... I have had luck with subtleties coming through more quickly this way.
