My DIY has very little flavoring added so my coils last for weeks or months but I rewick every few days. I make 3mm diameter single coils and use organic cotton that comes in thin square pads. I cut off a thin strip of cotton, make one end compressed and pointed so it will go through the coil and out the other end. Then I pull it through unitil there is enough fluffy cotton on both ends to finish the wick. The common mistake is to cut the cotton strip to wide or too narrow. There is no way to advise you about that. You'll get that with practice. Also I use 28 guage stainless wire which tends to be as sturdy and easy to work with as kanthal. Practice, practice, practice.

I use thrum scissors from fasttech to cut the strip and trim the wick and a pair of tweezers as needed.

Your coil will be the first component to need maintenance. Depending on your juice, your coil could get gunked up after 2mls or if clean burning could go 15 - 20mls. You'll have to judge for yourself depending on your e-liquid. Once your coil is gunked you'll want to remove the wick and give it a dry burn. Then rewick and you're back in business. One trick when threading your wick through the coil. Twist the cotton tightly just before feeding it through your coil to make it skinny as it passes through. Once centered and trimmed you can untwist it and fluff her up a bit.
