When it comes to cotton, large fluffy balls of organic cotton are my current favourite, and easily available at many drugstores as make-up removal options.

Which gauge kanthal should you use? Entirely up to you. I'd recommend 28 or 26 to get used to how it behaves under tension and how it holds its shape before you move on to other sizes. 30ga and smaller gets fidgety, and 24ga+ is very stiff and is harder to bend.

Spaced coils vs micro coils; actually, let's go over all the coils.
Contact coil vs spaced coils: contact coils are wrapped so the whole thing is in contact with itself, ie when you wrap the coil, each next wrap in the coil is touching the previous one (Easier). Spaced coils are wrapped so that the whole thing looks like an uncompressed spring; nothing touches (super fidgety and spit like a camel).
Nano coils: any coil wrapped with the inner diameter of roughly a paper clip wire (20ga, 1.5mm something like that)
Micro coils: typically any coil wrapped between the size of a nano and macro coil.
Macro coils: typically a coil with an inner diameter of over 1/8".
No measurement is absolute. Size of coil is very subjective. For example. a large clapton coil is a macro coil to some, and a micro to others.

Oh, one more:
Dragon coil: any coil that is wicked outside/around the coil rather than through the center, typically set vertically. I once made a pictorial on how to make these things on a thread long ago. If need be, I may be able to fish that back out.

It may help to know what device and battery you are building coils for. Each device is different. For instance and ego battery and Protank will take a different guage wire and build than a Mechanical mod and a double coil dripper.

For most of my devices I build simple open coils at 1.8 ohms. So 30ga wire is best for me.

Gauge of wire used to build with is highly dependent on the target ohms and the build deck of the rba being built.

When first starting to build, found 28 gauge to be best, was building at 1-2 ohms at the time. As my power went up, skills developed, me target ohms dropped. Now I build at 0.4-0.8 ohm, with a few in the range of 0.15-0.25 ohms. Will choose either 22, 24 or 26 gauge, depending on gear and target ohms.

It's best to get a sample of various gauges, to find what works best for your vape. Feel tension wrapped micro coils to be one of the best methods to becoming an competent, consistent builder.

Spaced coils are generally, free wrapped, or hand wrapped, around the wick, then mounted. Micro's are generally wrapped around a mandrel, drill bit, blunt tip syringe needle, basically anything round. Once mounted, pulsed, squeezed and set, the coil is then wicked juiced and vaped.

Any sterile or organic cotton is adequate to get one started in the wicking arena. But, just like wire, there are many different fibers to choose from too. Heck, besides the multitude of cotton fibers available, one can choose degummed Hemp, Ramie Top, Rayon, heck, there's even a seaweed fiber blend that looks very promising.

Main thing is just to get started. Get used to building, learn the basics, and go from there.

Personally, my purrefrance is tension wrapped coils, regardless of diameter, and Ramie fiber. Also use hemp fiber for some setups, like the nutty/woody taste it imparts on some flavors.

Vape long and Prosper.!!!

Hello guys, I am new to coil building and I am looking for a building setup(ie cotton, wires). I am not sure which gauge of kanthal I should buy. Also can someone please tell me what the difference is between spaced coils and micro coils? Thanks a lot in advance!

30 gauge kanthal a1 seems to be a versatile all-round gauge;
28 gauge is often used on rebuildables.

I currently have a 32 gauge I made on a 30mm veritas because I plan on giving a friend to help him convert and 32 gauge (its a 3.5 ohm coil) will work fine on an ego batt. I vape it at 5 watts

most of my other coils are 30 gauge vaping at 10 watts.
I have a couple 28 gauge coils vaping at 10 to 15 watts, but I find the 15 watts tends to get the toppers too uncomfortably hot when I'm chainvaping.
