Yep, I highly reccomend an ohm meter. As a matter of fact, it's a requirement. Otherwise it's like driving a car blind, you never know where you are and you could go boom!
As far as a build goes, get your ohm meter, some different thicknesses of kanthal, and some wicking material and try a bunch of different builds to see what you like best.
