Hi,

Im new to this forum and relatively new to vaping. I am currently having some issues and hopefully will get some advice while also introducing myself into a new community.

Firstly, the problem ive been having, I used to smoke 20 cigs a day before starting to vape about 6 week ago. I haven't stopped smoking completely yet as sometimes i forget my e-cig or if im at a friends house or out at the weekend the peer pressure takes over. This is something i need to take care of myself. But when i started vaping i purchased a petrol station E-cig and vaped that for about 1 week, but it was having no effect so i went to the store and purchased one from there a cool fire IV and that worked great until i misplaced it, so i decided last week i would buy a more expensive kit so i look after it better, so i purchased the Laisimo L1 and smok T4FV for the house and a Herakles for when im at work. The problem is with the Smok it makes me cough quite alot and the Herakles does not, I've seen its a problem with "newbie" vapers to have a cough, but mine only on one tank, im using the tri coil .2 ohms and the herakles is .4 ohms, is that the reason i cough becuase the Smok has a lower resistance. And will it go away with time? Thats probably a long paragraph but if you didnt read it all i adviced reading the part in red.

Now to introduce myself.

Im called Sam, and i come from the UK i believe most people here will be from the US so its always nice to talk to people from allover the world. Im 22 years old and have been smoking since 14 years old due to peer-pressure in school and my local shop willing to sell cigarettes to minors. And since then my fitness my breathing and general well-being has gone down hill which is why i choose to start vaping but sometimes its hard to kick the habit of smoking when its commonplace in your social groups and work place i work as an electrician on building sites so the majority of people smoke. But i gotta give to you guys and ladies that have quit after so many years of smoking. But hopefully after joining this forum getting advice and reading success stories will push me to stop the smoking alltogether.

Thanks for reading i know its long but i wanted to ask for help and introduce myself at the same time.

Welcome to ECF.

I'm going to assume that you are using the same e-liquid with the same nicotine concentration in both tanks, and using the same wattage for both tanks.

Have you tried changing the coil in the tank that is making you cough? It may be a bad coil.

Lower resistance coils generally make a warmer/hotter vape, and since you are relatively new to vaping you're not yet assimulated to the lower resistance coil. Plus, many vapers prefer a cooler vape (higher resistance coils).

Of course, higher watts makes a warmer/hotter vape, too. If your tanks have air intake adjustments, try fiddling with that too.

Welcome Samwaas, you came to the right place for info. Unfortuneatly I am old school and cant help much with the new sub ohm equipment out there now. I am just here to give this thread a bump so somebody with experience in the new stuff can help you. I am a little surprised that you have not recieved more help yet, maybe a slow day at ECF. Or you can just search and read old info here that is what I mainly do here. Good luck and hang in there, we all did it and you can too, just takes a little time to find the right equipment and juices.

I'm 69 years old, smoked for 50 years, at 66 I tried vaping, for 2 months I did both, smoked and vaped. Gradually the vaping took over, have not had a cigarette in almost 3 years. Oh and for the last 15 to 20 years I smoked 2 packs a day, camel wides or marlboro reds.I just wish these were around when I was younger.

Do you cough constantly with the smok? If it's kind of intermittent it could be trouble with the coil wicking. I will often cough when my coil is a bit dry, but not yet to a completely dry hit. It's just harsher on my throat.

Diffent tanks will wick differently, and some will need more time to wick juice in-between hits. I don't have any experience with either tank to know how well they wick though.

I use my Zephyrus RTA with 4 coils with a combined ohm'age of 0.15. I vape at 43 watts !. If i wanted a warmer vape, which i don't by the way, i'd turn the power up bit by bit but probably wouldn't ever exceed 55 watts. 80 watts is pretty high you know !. I wouldn't go that high unless i'd built something very elaborate in a dripper. And even then it would have so much wire crammed into it it would still be a cool vape.

1: "is that the reason I cough"

Short answer: yes.

2: "will it go away with time"

No.
If the smok setup makes you cough but the herakles doesn't, you've got some problem with the smok.

After switching to vaping, I realized that smoking was very boring. Vaping, on the other hand, is a huge world. It takes time to learn even the basics...and understand what we have learned.

As to smokers and peer pressure, pressure right back. I really believe that cigs are a stupid habit. Actually, I know I have drifted from one friend because of his attitude. Some people won't try switching for fear of failing. You are showing courage. Not many have courage to fight a hard fight.

Just worry about getting your nicotine so you don't have to smoke. My first bottle of juice was 36mg of Nic. Currently, I make my own at 2mg. AND, the young girls tell me I smell like a warm Cinnabon! Now that is cool.

If you switch the coil out and still have trouble with the smok, try turning it down a bit or adjusting:
VG / PG content: if you are not sensitive to an ingredient in your juice (based on your experience with the other tank), the Smok may not be wicking quick enough at the higher wattage. PG is thinner and will wick quicker.
Inhalation styles: drawing slower and longer directly into your (rather than into your mouth, then into your lungs) may reduce the coughing. You can also suck in a bit of room air with your hit (slipstreaming) and see if that helps.
Air Flow: tightening airflow can help wicking by helping to suck more liquid to the wick. On the other hand, loose air flow makes the direct lung hit possible. It would depend on whether your coughing is due to adjusting to vaping from smoking (it does take a little bit for your body to get used to the new sensation) or from dry/ burnt coils. Also, if you are able to get a good hit or two out of the smok before you cough, cover the air holes and give it a good suck. This keeps the wick soaked, and may help with dry/ burnt hits.

I used to burn out coils quickly. Now I don't (just started using prebuilts again). I used to hack and cough, especially at lower ohms. Now I don't.

Keep in mind, this is just from my experience. Lots of great, helpful people here. If one person's suggestion doesn't help you, another persons will.
