Hi folks - New member Dave from CT here. I just received my first ecig kit in the mail, a starter kit of eGo-T.

I smoke a pipe and inhale. The tobacco is flavored and there is no filter. Yet I can't inhale this vapor without coughing my brains out, even the lightest hit. I don't understand it.

The vendor was very helpful on my first order, and hooked me up with 3 juices to try (assorted tobaccos with vanilla or something) and all of them give me the same reaction. I just can't inhale them. The hardware wasn't cheap, I hope I can figure this out.

Are some juices milder and easier to take in than others? Is this a common complaint?

Thanks

First, try reading this article and see if it applies: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-information/337019-inhalation-technique-ecig-vs-cigarette.html.

Since vaping involves water vapor, you treat it a bit differently than cigs. I know when I forget (which I do less often over time), I cough myself silly. Water and lungs, not the best combination?

OK, thanks folks I've learned a lot here already. The ejuice I have is 18 mg which the vendor says is appropriate for a 1/2 pack a day smoker (my estimate with the pipe).

I've tried not inhaling and just keeping the smoke in my mouth and out through the nose. No coughing, IF I don't catch a bit of it on the way out. That could actually be a good thing, to not have crap in my lungs anymore. But I'm not getting the satisfaction (feeding the need) and find myself regressing to the pipe again. Part of that may be that I have dentures and a good part of my mouth is covered with plastic inside. (Sux to be old).

You guys refer to pg / vg - what differences to they make, and can you choose them or are they fixed by the brand or whatever?

Thanks again.

They make a difference in how much vapor is made, and how hard it hits the back of your throat called "throat hit" by most which is what is making you cough. Some vendors only sell liquids with one or the other used as their base liquid, other vendors let you choose which you want, or even custom mix percentages for you on order.

Generally though people just take little time to get accustomed to it, it made me cough a bit when I started, but that passed in a few days. You could likely also go lower on nicotine content as well which could help too.

That's highly variable and you'll have to do some experimenting. Some pack a day smokers need 24mg or higher, some 2 pack a day smokers use 18 or lower. It's hard to say really. I'm trying 12mg though I could go through 2 packs a day. But I did have a bad habit of lighting up, getting a drag, then half forgetting it in the ashtray while working on something at the computer only to find it mostly gone by the time I reached for it again. So I'm not completely sure how "heavy" a smoker I really was. More than a pack, yes but not sure I was actually smoking all the ones I was... burning?

Everybody's different. I've read the posts of folks around here where they talk about picking up vaping and walking away from smoking and never looking back. Others, it takes longer. I've been at this about a month now and still once in a while smoke a cigarette. But it fell from over a pack a day to three or four a day to one or two a day to maybe three a week. Long as the "trend" is down, I'm happy.

It can take some experimenting to hit the right combination. One thing that hit me when I first got going is the stunning variety available. Flavors, PG and VG, nicotine levels... it's unreal. Give yourself some time and play around with it.

Those two are the base liquids propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). Folks often say PG produces better flavor and "throat hit" while VG produces more vapor. It's personal preference and you'll just have to try different mixes. I tend to lean toward VG myself. I like vapor. :)

And very few things are "fixed". Liquids are offered in all kinds of combinations. All PG, all VG, 80/20, 50/50... and if you prefer a mix not offered, you can get the base liquids separate and mix it yourself. Not a lot of limits to this.

I suggest looking for liquid vendors who offer "sample packs" or find a vape shop that lets you try out liquids. The number of options can be a bit overwhelming at first. But, also, gives you a lot of room to find what works for you and what you like.

a few things come to mind..my wife had the same problem.

first the ego-t atty set up is horrible and usually burns juice because of the crummy wick design making it very harsh=might want to get a vivi nova tank or a kanger t3 for that.

next would be how you are inhaling it, thin airy hits will be harsh your better off taking larger thicker hits it will be smoother, also fill your mouth with vapor then inhale taking it straight to your lungs will be harsher.

next would be to get some e liquid with higher VG content 100% VG is smother then the steam in your shower,to smooth in my opinion its like im not inhaling anything try some 50%vg/50%pg juice.

other thing would be to stay hydrated and keep at it the first few days can be tough to get used to it but you'll get there:)

took me about a week to get the hang of it.. I was a 1.5 pack of Marb Reds/ Marb Blacks/ Newports guy, and have been vaping for about 2 months now. The uncomfortable feeling in the throat and lungs has long subsided and I enjoy all types of different liquids at mostly 24mg nic levels, no coughing, all enjoyment. Definitely agree that exhaling out of the nose is a great way to get the full flavor of the liquid you're vaping. keep at it, and don't go back to the stinkies!
