New Vaper here- interest in building a box mod

Hello all. I'm Timmy ☺️ Im pretty new to vaping but I've already caught the bug. I used to be a pack a day smoker but i quit for 2 months before my girlfriend introduced me to vaping. I was still having cravings but now i have no interest in going back to smoking

I'm vaping in an ego C-twist with a Naultilus right now. It was a great starter but I'm definitely ready for an upgrade. When i started i perferred mouth to lung style vaping but now i love strai lung hits! I plan on buying an Atlantis for that airflow and their superior mini-carto coil design. And i also want to get a Lemo to experiment with an RTA and see how i like it.

Im an engineering student so i have a decent understanding of simple circuits. On the flip side, being a student, i dont have much money to work with lol. So I've been thinking about building a regulated box mod. I've done quite a bit of research on the forums and watching youtube vids.

Should i go with the DNA 30 or 40 chip? I'm leaning toward the DNA40 with the temp control option. That would give me more options when i get into the more advanced builds and i could still run the Atlantis on it until then. Does this make for a tougher build?

I want to go with flat batteries with an on board charging port rather than cylindrical batteries. I think they make for a tighter fit and cleaner looking build. Is this a wise choice? I know the 18650's are most popular but dont really understand why.

A list of popular enclosures, batteries, hardware, and switches would be nice to look at. Havent really found one compiled yet. It would also be very helpful to see a list of where to buy. It would be nice to be able to get most items for my build from one site but i doubt thats going to happen. Haha

Hi TwoWheelTimmy and welcome to ECF!

I've heard the the rDNA 40 chip is a bit harder to build, but really have no experience. Hopefully, someone with direct experience will be by shortly.

As to batteries - I think you may have a bit of a hard time locating a flat battery that will have the Constant Discharge Amp rating that you'll need for vaping. Currently, most high-end batteries have a constant rating of 20 amps.

Hope that helps and Happy Vaping!

Aaahhhh okay thank you for your responses. I will go check out the modding stickies. And knowing that i will probably end up going with some cylindrical batteries then. Battery selection is my biggest issue at the moment. If the 40 board is a tougher build, that doesn't deter me. It will just require a little more research lol. I really want to get my batteries, enclosure, and hardware selected and be sure i can fit it all in there before i buy because with limited funds, i dont want to keep the cost to a minimum.

The onboard charger and everything is going to be pretty rough. I remember when I first started project boxes I was having a rough time with wiring. If I were you I'd just build a regulated parallel 18650 Hammond just so you can get a feel for it. The actual wiring isn't hard it's the pin out, I hard wire everything so I tend to get stressed out from time to time with bending and what not.
