Just steamed everything in my kitchen. Noticed the sides of the step ladder were dirty. Steamed it and it was tar. It's been 4 freaking years. I know the walls and ceiling still have spots that won't be gone until I get the apartment primed and painted (and I'm too old and tired to bother) but everything else should be tar-free by now.

And I dropped a wet (but chemical-free) paper towel behind the stove. Is that dangerous? Do I need to get the super up to fish it out?

    Might not be while it's wet but when dry could be

    If it has a storage drawer it may be as easy as pulling this out and sticking the broom back there from below?
