I have the exact opposite problem. People look at Hugh and think "male" despite the fact that I have my gender in bold & pink in my signature.
It's weird because the House fandom is largely female (with the male fans having watched the show a lot but not necessarily congregating to rehash every minute, character and thespian.) I am therefore accustomed to looking at Hugh as an avatar and thinking "female with Excellent taste in men.

if you want to start with the first doctor you can, it gets more complicated that way, new watchers should start out with the reboot in 2005. Starting at the reboot is good, there will be a few moments that you get lost and i do mean FEW such as when he meets sara jane and k-9 again, things like that but you can basically learn all from since the reboot

I think I was too young to really understand it, but I remember clearly being scared by some of the villains.
Maybe a good reason for me to start at the beginning.
Does anyone know how long it may have been off before the reboot in 2005?

I hadn't watched since the Tom Baker days but just started when I saw that Amazon Prime had it for free streaming.
There was a 15 year gap between the end of the series and it's being relaunched in 2005. Start there with the 9th Doctor, Christopher Eccelston. (Also, the production values required much more imagination in the old days which was fun. Now they have an actual budget.)
I'm having a hard time getting into the 11th Doctor. I don't find his character very interesting even though the acting is fine. Of course, Tennant was a tough act to follow -- he has enough personality for 10 incarnations, all by himself.
I know. It's been on like forever. That's why I asked. But it's probably on Netflix. I usually watch several episodes of whatever series I'm watching each night. I'm not worried about catching up... I'd just like to enjoy the show.
So, original Episode 1, or what?
Poeia says a 15 year break above.
I read recently that an enormous cache of the lost episodes was found at some TV station in Asia. Expect digitally remastered DVDs soon.

I know that a lot of people follow the show and actors to this extent. This is why I thought I might like the show. Attention all GV Poopies.....Attentione!
